FIRST EDITION. Nice copy of the author's first publication. A small number of copies were privately issued, the greater portion of which were bought up by his father. This little pamphlet, which was written by Stevenson when he was barely sixteen years old, was the outcome of the interest taken by him in the stories of the Covenanters that he had learned from his nurse. Inserted is an autograph check signed by Stevenson.

STEVENSON'S OWN COPY, with a manuscript list of contents in his handwriting occupying about two and a half pages of the fly-leaves. In this list Stevenson gives the names of the various contributors, including his own articles. There are several marginal notes in pen and pencil, one of them a criticism of Rossetti, reading: "He cloys you like Yorkshire pudding. Look at the 7th and 8th lines of the very sonnet quoted on last page. Is that not cloyous?'' All are in Stevenson's handwriting.

As a First Edition the above item has great interest and value, as it contains "College Papers," 3 articles; "The Philosophy of Umbrellas,' in collaboration with J. W. Ferrier; "An Old Scotch Gardener," and "The Philosophy of Nomenclature.

FIRST EDITION. Exceedingly rare. This Essay, to which was awarded the Society's Silver Medal, was read before the Society on March 27, 1871. Only a few copies (probably not more than 50) were issued separately from the types of the Transactions, with the pagination altered, and a title-page added. Inserted is an autograph check signed by Stevenson.

Very scarce.

THE VERY RARE ORIGINAL EDITION. An extremely interesting copy, with autograph signature of W. E. Henley and inscription on title "Charles Warner, from the authors." Contains numerous pen and pencil markings and marginal notes, in the handwriting of Henley and Stevenson. Apparently Henley's own copy, with his manuscript notes and corrections in ink, sent by him to Charles Warner, and afterwards received by Stevenson, who had penciled out several lines, including the inscription, and added several marginal corrections of the text in pencil. From Stevenson's library, with the Vailima book label signed by Isobel Strong. Inserted is an autograph check signed by Stevenson.

This is one of the rarest of Stevenson's books and is particularly interesting for the illustrations, which were not only designed but also engraved by him.

FIRST EDITION. This book was prepared for issue in 1882, but in consequence of a dispute which arose with the proposed publishers upon the question of copyright, the project was abandoned, and the book withdrawn before publication. The work was never made up" for issue, and the few copies that have survived are merely such sets of the sheets as chanced to have been preserved by the publishers and printers. Inserted is an autograph check signed by Stevenson.
