PREFACE.

IN the preparation of this Catalogue we have been assisted and advised throughout by Mr. Alfred W. Pollard, of the British Museum, whose skill in such matters is known to all who have seen the Catalogue of the "Rowfant Books" in Mr. Locker-Lampson's library. For the success of the illustrations we have to thank Mr. Prætorius. We think that the work as a whole needs no "preface of the German cut," or garnish of common-places. The compilers are content to be like the writer known to Montaigne: "L'autheur commettant à divers de ses amis sçavans la recherche de cette-çy et de cette autre matière, à le bastir; se contentant de sa part d'en avoir projetté le dessein, et lié par son industrie ce fagot de provisions incogneues: au moins, est sien l'encre et le papier."
