FIRST EDITION. 12mo, full dark brown levant morocco, inlaid with brown, red, green, olive, and white, introducing flowers and leaves, death's heads, and heads of cherubs, vases, hour-glasses, torches, birds, mirrors, snakes, and other objects, inlaid or tooled in colors and gold and silver; doublures of light brown inlaid in various colors with cherubs, hearts, skeletons, and other figures in a most elaborate pattern; gilt and gauffred edges, silver clasps. In a leather case, which in turn encloses folding doors tooled in gold and inlaid, lined with satin, by Ch. Meunier. Paris, 1857

An elaborate specimen of Meunier's work, executed for Mr. Avery. The book is EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED by the insertion of 2 Autograph Letters of Baudelaire, 1 of Bracquemond, and 2 by Champfleury; 2 portraits of the author, original drawings and proof etchings and 33 ornamental head- and tail-pieces by Bracquemond.

A CURIOUS MODERN FRENCH BINDING BY MEUNIER, especially executed for Mr. Avery. Inserted are numerous portraits and fanciful proof etchings by Rops, Bracquemond and others, together with an A. L. S. of Baudelaire. The chiseled design on the front cover is somewhat after the design of one of the Rops etchings inserted.

VERY RARE. Pedantius is represented birch in hand, uttering the words, "As in praesenti,'' behind his back two boys are standing, and on a shelf above are a number of volumes. The figure of Pedantius is supposed to be a picture of Beard himself, who was schoolmaster to Oliver Cromwell. A small hole in title has been repaired.

85. BELLARMIN (ROBERT, Cardinal). Traite de l'eternelle felicite des saints, divise en cinq livres: Et traduit du Latin du grand Cardinal Belarmin. Vignette on title-page. Engraved head-pieces with the arms of Louis XIV and tail-pieces with the initials P. R. 8vo, full red French morocco, exquisitely gold tooled. Inside of a dentelle border a double fillet of two pairs of lines separated by small joined circles, lozenges and squares, with a single dot in their centres, encloses the main framework. This is cantled with quarter circles at the corners, and small semicircular spaces at middle of sides, and encloses two large quatrefoil panels. The framework is absolutely covered with graceful scrolls beautifully gold-tooled in solid lines with ornaments and dots. Back panels gold-tooled to match, linings of brocade silk, gilt edges, with a beautiful open-work scroll and foliated silver gilt clasp, by Le Gascon. Paris: P. Rocolet, 1656
