The center panel is a lozenge in red, tooled with scrolls, acorns and

rosette, the surrounding panel filled with roses on stems, and acorns. The back is inlaid with lozenge, half lozenges and circles, and gold-tooled to match sides, gilt edges, painted and gauffred in a chamois-lined maroon morocco solander case.

A fine example of the bindings done for De Thou, of most unusual construction. It has a great additional interest, as the book contains De Thou's name on the last page: "Jacobi Augusti Thuani."’ There are marginal notes, also, which may be in his handwriting.

Laid in is a copy of the pamphlet "Oraison Fenebre, es Obseques de Feu Messire Christofle de Thou,'' etc. Paris, 1583.

THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION. The "Noble Numbers" at the end have separate title and pagination, with the last two leaves in neat facsimile. The leaf of Errata is present and perfect. The portrait by Marshall appears to be a skilful pen-and-ink production.

Herrick's Hesperides," one of the masterpieces of English Literature, is one of the rarest books to procure in the First Edition, in perfect condition. Laid in, is Clinton Scollard's "A Book-lover's wish," in which he sings the praise of a FIRSTHESPERIDES.''

Within a narrow border, the sides are completely covered with small compartments formed by inlaid foliations of dark blue morocco, with roundels of red morocco at their intersecting points. In the marginal compartments are tooled the monogram S.P.A. In each of the others is a gold foliated ornament with a conventional flower inlaid in a lighter blue morocco. Similar ornamentation appears on the back. Doublures of light blue levant morocco, graceful gilt paneled border, inlaid corners of a darker blue morocco, with monogram S.P.A.
