Engraved title-page to the first volume, with portrait by Cecil. 2 vols. in one, 12mo, full dark brown morocco, inlaid with light brown and red morocco, richly tooled in gold. The corners are inlaid with hearts in red, neatly tooled with roses on stems; in centre of borders are circles in light brown with rosettes; the rest of the border is tooled with scrolls, acorns, and open roses. The center panel is a lozenge in red, tooled with scrolls, acorns and

rosette, the surrounding panel filled with roses on stems, and acorns. The back is inlaid with lozenge, half lozenges and circles, and gold-tooled to match sides, gilt edges, painted and gauffred in a chamois-lined maroon morocco solander case.

FIRST EDITION. This volume includes: "A Priest to the Temple, 1652'' and Jacula Prudentium, 1651.” Each with separate title and pagination. The separate title to the first work is rarely found with the book. With bookplate of William Bell Scott.

443. HERODOTUS. Herodiani Historia de Imperio Post Marcum: Vel, de suis temporibus, Angelo Politiano interprete. Vignette on title. 18mo, original mottled boards. In a contemporary French red morocco case, formed in the shape of a book, gilt back with monogram, the sides decorated with the arms of Jacques Auguste de Thou, and his second wife, Gasparde de La Chastre, gilt edges. Lugduni, 1559

A fine example of the bindings done for De Thou, of most unusual construction. It has a great additional interest, as the book contains De Thou's name on the last page: "Jacobi Augusti Thuani."’ There are marginal notes, also, which may be in his handwriting.

Laid in is a copy of the pamphlet "Oraison Fenebre, es Obseques de Feu Messire Christofle de Thou,'' etc. Paris, 1583.

444. HERRICK (ROBERT). Hesperides: or, The Works both Humane & Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq. Woodcut of crown on title and portrait of Herrick by Marshall. London, 1848; [also] HIS NOBLE NUMBERS; or, His Pious Pieces, Wherein (amongst other things) he sings the Birth of Christ: and sighes for his Saviours suffering on the Crosse. In one volume. 8vo, full brown levant morocco, filet borders on back and sides, inside dentelles, gilt edges, by Zaehnsdorf.

THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION. The "Noble Numbers" at the end have separate title and pagination, with the last two leaves in neat facsimile. The leaf of Errata is present and perfect. The portrait by Marshall appears to be a skilful pen-and-ink production.

Herrick's Hesperides," one of the masterpieces of English Literature, is one of the rarest books to procure in the First Edition, in perfect condition. Laid in, is Clinton Scollard's "A Book-lover's wish," in which he sings the praise of a FIRSTHESPERIDES.''

446. HERVILLY (ERNEST D'). Le Harem. 12mo, full citron morocco, inlaid and gold-tooled. Within a narrow border, the sides are completely covered with small compartments formed by inlaid foliations of dark blue morocco, with roundels of red morocco at their intersecting points. In the marginal compartments are tooled the monogram S.P.A. In each of the others is a gold foliated ornament with a conventional flower inlaid in a lighter blue morocco. Similar ornamentation appears on the back. Doublures of light blue levant morocco, graceful gilt paneled border, inlaid corners of a darker blue morocco, with monogram S.P.A. Flys of striped brocade silk, marbled flys, in green morocco solander case, by Meunier. Paris, 1874

FIRST EDITION. Inserted are the ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWINGS made by H. Somm for the Rouveyre and Blond edition of 1884; an extra titlepage of that edition, and four autograph letters-two of the author, and two of the illustrator.
