A PATHETIC LETTER WRITTEN WHEN POE WAS HANDICAPPED BY POVERTY, ILL-
NESS AND PERSECUTION. HE HAD BORROWED MONEY FROM MR. COX MORE THAN
A YEAR BEFORE AND COULD NOT REPAY IT. HIS "TALES OF THE GROTESQUE
AND ARABESQUE" HAD JUST BEEN PUBLISHED AND HE MENTIONS SENDING
MR. COX A COPY WITH THE HOPE THAT BETTER TIMES ARE COMING.
"I am really afraid you will think me the most ungrateful person in the
world; as I have not only failed to return you the money so kindly lent, but
have never even seen you since to apologize . . . The simple truth is, that the
mortification I feel in not being able to repay you, has been the reason of my
not calling upon you..

"Mess. Lea & Blanchard have JUST ISSUED TWO VOLS. OF TALES, BY MY-
