Containing an Impartial Account of the most Remarkable Affairs of State during the Seventeenth Century, not mentioned by other Historians, more particularly relating to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland under the Reigns of Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, and King James, in most of which Transactions the Author was personally and publickly concerned. These memoirs were accidentally found in the Castle of Edinburgh. The Rev. Mark Noble, author of many historical works, wrote in his own copy of this work as follows:- I declare I know no work more authentic than this, and very few that are half so entertaining. In the Bibliotheca Grenvilliana,' it is stated that it was privately printed, and that the translator announces in his preface that he rather suffered its being printed for a few friends than that he consents.' This appears to be a mistake, as the translator died many years before his version was printed. And the preface alluded to is manifestly by the original author, Mendoza. It is noticed as a posthumous work in the Introductory Memoir,' by Sir N. Harris Nicolas, to his edition of the Memoirs of Lady Fanshawe. It is a scarce book. MENESTRIER (C. F.)
