Earnestly desiring and seeking Holiness.
1 JESUS, Thine all-victorious love Shed in my heart abroad; Then shall my feet no longer rove, Rooted and fix'd in GOD.
2 Love only can the conquest win, The strength of sin subdue, (Mine own unconquerable sin,) And form my soul anew.
3 Love can bow down the stubborn neck, The stone to flesh convert;
Soften, and melt, and pierce, and break, An adamantine heart.
4 O that in me the sacred fire Might now begin to glow!
Burn up the dross of base desire, And make the mountains flow!
5 0 that it now from heav'n might fall, And all my sins consume!
Come, HOLY GHOST, for Thee I call ; Spirit of burning, come.
6 Refining fire, go through my heart, Illuminate my soul;
Scatter Thy life through ev'ry part, And sanctify the whole.
7 My stedfast soul, made one with Thee, Shall then no longer move; But CHRIST be all the world to me, And all my heart be love.
Earnestly desiring and seeking Holiness.
1 JESUS, the all-restoring Word, My fallen spirit's hope,
After Thy lovely likeness, LORD, Ah, when shall I wake up?
2 Thou, O my GOD, Thou only art The Life, the Truth, the Way; Quicken my soul, instruct my heart, My sinking footsteps stay.
3 Of all Thou hast on earth below, In heav'n above, to give, Give me Thy only love to know, In Thee to walk and live.
4 Fill me with all the life of Love; In mystic union join
Me to Thyself, and let me prove The fellowship divine.
5 Open the intercourse between My longing soul and Thee, Never to be broke off again To all eternity.
Earnestly desiring and seeking the Shepherd.
1 THOU Shepherd of Israel and mine, The joy and desire of my heart, For closer communion I pine;
I long to reside where Thou art: The pasture I languish to find,
Where all, who their SHEPHERD obey, Are fed, on Thy bosom reclin❜d,
And screen'd from the heat of the day.
2 Ah! show me that happiest place, The place of Thy people's abode, Where saints in an ecstasy gaze, And hang on a crucified GOD: Thy love for a sinner declare ; Thy passion and death on the tree; My spirit to Calvary bear,
To suffer and triumph with Thee.
3 'Tis there with the lambs of Thy flock, There only I covet to rest; To lie at the foot of the rock, Or rise to be hid in Thy breast: "Tis there I would always abide, And never a moment depart; Conceal'd in the cleft of Thy side, Eternally held in Thy heart.
"Whom have I in Heaven, &c."
1 COME, SAVIOUR-JESUS, from above! Assist me with Thy heav'nly grace! Empty my heart of earthly love, And for Thyself prepare the place.
2 O let Thy sacred presence fill, And set my longing spirit free! Which pants to have no other will, But night and day to feast on Thee.
3 While in this region here below, No other good will I pursue; I'll bid this world of noise and shew, With all it's glittring snares, adieu.
4 That path with humble speed I'll seek, In which my SAVIOUR'S footsteps shine; Nor will I hear, nor will I speak Of any other love but Thine.
5 Henceforth may no profane delight Divide this consecrated soul; Possess it Thou, who hast the right, As LORD and MASTER of the whole.
6 Nothing on earth do I desire,
But Thy pure love within my breast: This, only this will I require,
And freely give up all the rest.
1 As when the weary trav❜ller gains The height of some o'er-looking hill, His heart revives, if cross the plains He eyes his home, though distant still.
2 While he surveys the much-lov'd spot, - He slights the space that lies between; His past fatigues are now forgot, Because his journey's end is seen.
3 Thus, when the Christian pilgrim views, By faith, his mansion in the skies, The sight his fainting strength renews, And wings his speed to reach the prize:"
4 The thought of home his spirit cheers, No more he grieves for troubles past; Nor any future trial fears,
So he may safe arrive at last.
5 'Tis there, he says, I am to dwell With JESUS, in the realms of day; Then I shall bid my cares farewell, And He will wipe my tears away.
6 JESUS, on Thee our hope depends, To lead us on to Thine abode; Assur'd our hope will make amends For all our toil while on the road.
