GAME FISHES OF THE UNITED STATES: the Text by Professor G. BROWN GOODE, the 20 FINE COLOURED PLATES (size 22 by 28 inches), by S. A. KILBOURNE, mounted on heavy card-boards, price £12 in parts; or, bound in hf. morocco extra, £14. 1879

LIST OF PLATES.

ATLANTIC SALMON-EASTERN RED-SPECKLED TROUT-LARGE-MOUTHED BLACK BASS-SPANISH MACKEREL-STRIPED BASS, OR ROCK-FISH-RED SNAPPER-BLUE FISH-YELLOW PERCH-MACKEREL -SQUETEAGUE, OR WEAK FISH-SEA BASS, OR SOUTHERN BLACK-FISH-POMPANO-SHEEPSHEADKING-FISH-LAKE, OR SALMON TROUT-BONITO-GRAYLING-RED FISH, OR SOUTHERN BASSQUINNAT, OR CALIFORNIA SALMON-MASQUALLONGE-MAP SHOWING GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION. "GAME FISHES" is acknowledged to be the most sumptuous work ever offered to collectors of books on Angling, and its illustrations are in many respects finer than the finest natural history pictures ever published.

"The plates are exact reproductions-lithographs in water colours-of the paintings by the late S. A. KILBOURNE, of Morrisania, the studies for which were made from life, by the brook and on the shore, with the inspiration of pure air and open sky. Colour and life action are shown with striking effect, while details of form and structure are preserved with scientific accuracy, each painting having been criticized by skilful Ichthyologists."

The text was prepared by PROFESSOR G. BROWN GOODE, Assistant Director of the United States National Museum, the head of the Fishery Department of the Tenth Census, who was also Commissioner in charge of the American Department of the Berlin Fishery Exhibition. It is in no sense a compilation, but is made largely of fresh material from the investigations of the author, and by permission from the archives of the Fish Commission. It includes biographies of nearly all the important fishes of North America, many others than those shown in the plates being discussed in the text.

This work presents a series of exact illustrations of some of the principal Game Birds and Water Fowl of North America, coloured to the life, and reproduced from the drawings of an artist-sportsman who has given them years of careful and patient study. The subjects chosen are those most interesting to sports. The male and female of each variety are shown, and accuracy in colour, form, and size are combined with excellent effect. The letterpress is compiled, by permission, from the works of Audubon, Wilson, Baird, Coues, and other well-known authorities.

GENERAL ELECTION OF 1880.

AN UNIQUE COLLECTION OF ELECTION LITERATURE AND ART. CONTAINING NEARLY 650 ILLUSTRATIONS.

AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF BALLADS, BROADSIDES, SATIRICAL ENGRAVINGS AND CARICATURES (some coloured), PORTRAITS (including the fine series of large lithographic Portraits of the present Ministry), ADDRESSES, PARODIES, SQUIBS, etc., all connected with the General Parliamentary Election of 1880; the whole carefully mounted on thick drab paper, with guards, and blank paper for insertions, forming 3 fine vols. Imperial Folio, 1 vol. demy folio, and 3 vols. post 8vo.Together 7 vols. strongly bound in Half Morocco, uniform, £35.

1880

The above is the most remarkable Collection of Election Literature ever formed, and only brought together by the application of considerable trouble and expense. Where possible, the contents have been arranged according to constituencies, Great Britain and Ireland being equally represented, and with so much care as to preclude the necessity of redistribution. The three smaller volumes consist of Pamphlets, germane to the matter, some of them with cuts.

Altogether it forms a complete Literary, Biographical, Satirical, and Pictorial History of the most hotly contested Election of recent times, and must ever remain not only as the most interesting souvenir of that eventful period, but as displaying the Customs and Manners of the present age.

GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, complete from its commencement in 1731 to May, 1868 (end of the series), many hundred portraits and other engravings, 224 vols. 8vo. half calf (not uniform), £25. 1731-1868 A most valuable book of reference for all subjects appertaining to Local History, Historical Events, Literature, Biography, Family History, etc., for nearly a century and a half. Such full lists of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, during the whole period of its existence, can nowhere else be found.

"The whole series to the present time should be in the library of every student of English Litera ture or Political History. DR. JOHNSON, in the commencement of his literary career drew his chief means of support from his contributions to the "Gentleman's Magazine." In 1778 JOHN NICHOLS obtained a share in the Magazine, and rendered it more valuable than at any period of its former history. EDMUND BURKE entitled it one of the most chaste and instructive miscellanies of the age-an opinion corroborated by DR. WARTON and EDWARD GIBBON; the latter of whom urged Nichols to make a selection for future reference from its overflowing pages. RICHARD GOUGH was for many years a constant contributor.”—Allibone's Dictionary of English and American Authors.
