*THE RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, without the preliminary leaves of press notices found in some copies. In this copy, however, are inserted rough galley-proofs (5) of newspaper notices relating to the work, including the famous letter of Emerson to Whitman. And on considering this latter feature of this copy, it would seem more than probable that the present was WHITMAN'S OWN COPY, as it is not likely that any one but the author would go to the trouble of collecting and preserving proofs of articles which concerned no one so much as himself.
