INDIES.

188. EARLY VOYAGES TO THE EAST INDIES. Walker (William). The Journall, or Dayly Register, Contayning A True Manifestation, and Historicall declaration of the voyage accomplished by eight shippes of Amsterdam, under the conduct of Jacob Corneliszen Neck and Wybrandt van Warwick, which sayled the first of March, 1598. Shewing the Course they Kept, and other matters. Printed in BLACK LETTER, with woodcut on the title-page. Small 4to, crimson morocco gilt extra, by RIVIERE. Imprinted at London, for Cuthbert Burby and John Flasket, 1601.

* A translation of the Second, or Journal, Part of "L'Histoire de la Navigation aux Indes Orientales par les Hollandois," with the Appendix of Malish (Malay) Words.

Walker introduces his translation with a letter to " Master Thomas Smith, Sheriffe of the honorable Citie of London, and Governor of the famous companie of the English Merchants, trading to the East Indies, Sumatra, Java, the Isles of the Mulucos," and to the Aldermen and the rest of the Commities and Societie" of the Corporation. In the course of his epistle we are told that he was partly induced by the persuasion of Hakluyt to translate the Journal, by which, of course, he may intend nothing more than the persuasion of example. Of the Dutch he takes a friendly view. They were indebted to Drake, Candish and others. His solitary reference to the Portugals," however, is far from complimentary.
