381. SHAKESPEARE (WILLIAM). The Works of Shakespeare. Edited by W. E. Henley. The illustrations consist of five finely engraved portraits of Shakespeare, after Van Somer, Chandos, Ely House portrait, Droeshout; portraits of Herbert, Henry Wriothsley, Richard Burbage, and others; nearly a hundred engravings of famous actors and actresses who have represented Shakespearean characters, have been inlaid and beautifully colored by hand, among them may be mentioned Macready, Hackett, Miss Marston, Barry Sullivan, Julia St. George, Miss Winstanley, Mr. Buckstone, Julia Harland, etc.; over 60 photogravures have been inserted in duplicate, one set of which has been delicately hand colored, these represent scenes and characters of Shakspeare, views of places in which he was interested, etc.; another interesting feature are the numerous colored engravings of his female characters and one or two scenes from every play have been inlaid and colored. Around every colored photogravure, engraving or plate is an exquisite original water-color designed to enhance the beauty of the plate; these are also scattered through the work as head- and tail-pieces, borders, and even painted over the text at times, totaling over 500 separate designs. 20 vols. small folio, SUMPTUOUSLY BOUND IN FULL PURPLE CRUSHED LEVANT MOROCCO; SIDES WITH BROAD GILT

AND DIAMOND-SHAPED BLUE INLAYS, FROM WHICH RUN FOUR
GILT VINES ABOUT AN OPEN PANEL IN THE CENTRE, AND NUMER-
OUS GREEN LEAVES AND WHITE BLOSSOMS ARE INLAID ON THE

*Fine copy of the first and only edition. The publication of these "leters' disclosed one of the most ingenious literary forgeries of modern times. Not only in the handwriting, but in other details, they were so carefully executed that they deceived eminent experts, and Browning was indued to write a lengthy introductory essay. The genuineness of the letters was first questioned by Mr. F. T. Palgrave, who saw the book at Tennyson's house, and accidentally opened it at a passage which he recognized as taken from an article contributed by his father to

the Quarterly Review. Little by little the network of fraud was unravelled. The book was rigidly suppressed and the remaining copies were destroyed, and, as only a few copies had got into circulation, it is now very rare. The forgery is attributed to George Byron, said to be the natural son of Byron and the Maid of Athens.

Published anonymously, it gained its popularity by sheer merit, it being a long time before the identity of its author became known.
