What does our Church teach us, as regards the HOLY GHOST?

7. Q. What does that mean?

[ocr errors]

A. That the HOLY GHOST is of the Father and of the Son; and that such as the FATHER is, such is the SON, and such is the HOLY GHOST."

The FATHER eternal, the SoN eternal, and the HOLY GHOST eternal."

"So likewise the FATHER is almighty, the Son almighty, and the HOLY GHOST almighty."

66

So the FATHER is GOD, the SON is GOD, and the HOLY GHOST is GOD; and yet there are not three Gods, but ONE GOD."

8. Q. Show from Holy Scripture, that the HOLY GHOST is GOD;

A. The HOLY GHOST is called in Scripture

The "SPIRIT OF GOD.”

And it came to pass, that JESUS being baptized of John in Jordan, and praying, the heaven was opened, and the HOLY GHOST descended in a bodily shape like a dove, upon Him,"

And John saw the SPIRIT OF GOD descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him;"

And John bare record, saying, I saw THE SPIRIT descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him."

St. Luke iii. 21. 22.-St. Matt. iii. 17.-St. John i. 32. Gen. i. 2. vi. 3.-Job xxxiii. 4.-Rom. viii. 9. 14.-1 Cor, ii. 11. iii. 16. vi. 11. xii. 3.-2 Cor. iii. 3.-Eph. iv. 30.—1 Pet. iv. 14.

And the SPIRIT OF GOD, IS GOD.

"For GOD IS A SPIRIT, and they that worship Him, must worship Him in spirit and in truth."-St. John iv. 24.

The HOLY GHOST is also called in Scripture, The SPIRIT OF CHRIST.

"Ye are not in the flesh, but in THE SPIRIT, if so be that the SPIRIT OF GOD dwelleth in you. Now, if any man have not the SPIRIT OF CHRIST, he is none of His."-Rom. viii. 9.-1 Peter i. 11.

And, THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD, is THE LORD.

"Where the SPIRIT OF THE LORD is, there is liberty. Now, THE LORD is that SPIRIT."-2 Cor, iii. 17. 18.

(comp. St. John xiv. 16. and St. Matt. xxviii. 20.) 9. Q. What more do you learn in the Bible, respecting the HOLY GHOST?

A. The Bible teaches that, since the HOLY GHOST is GOD,

HE IS ETERNAL.

"How much more shall the blood of CHRIST, who through the ETERNAL SPIRIT offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?"-Heb. ix. 14.

It teaches also:

That the Holy Ghost is ALMIGHTY.

"The SPIRIT OF GOD hath made me; and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”—Job xxxiii. 4. -Ps. xxxiii. 6.-Gen. i. 2.

That HE IS EVERY WHERE.

[ocr errors]

Whither shall I go from THY SPIRIT? or, whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into Heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in Hell, behold, Thou art there."-Ps. cxxxix. 7.-Job xxvi. -Jer. xxiii. 24.-Jonah i. 3.

And in the Bible we learn,

That the HOLY GHOST SEARCHES AND KNOWS ALL THINGS. 'As it is written, eye hath not seen, and ear hath not heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.

But God hath revealed them unto us by His SPIRIT ; for the SPIRIT SEARCHETH ALL THINGS, yea, the deep things of GOD."-1 Cor. ii, 9. 10.—St. John xiv. 26, xvi. 13.-1 John ii. 27.

10. Q. Show also from Scripture that, as our Church teaches, the HOLY GHOST comes from the FATHER and the Son;

First, GOD THE FATHER promised to send HIS HOLY SPIRIT Upon His people :

"I will pour мY SPIRIT upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring."-Is. xliv. 3.-Joel ii. 28 -Acts ii. 18.-St. Luke xxiv. 44.

Secondly, He sheds it abundantly through JESUS CHRIST our SAVIOUR," who said to His Apostles:

"I will pray the FATHER, and He shall give you another COMFORTER," "which is the HOLY GHOST, whom the FATHER WILL SEND in my name; and He shall teach you all things." "And when the COMFORTER is come, whom I WILL SEND unto you from the FATHER, even the Spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the FATHER, He shall testify of me." -St. John xiv. 16. 26. xv. 26. xvi. 7. 13.

Therefore CHRIST being by the right hand of GoD exalted, and having RECEIVED of the FATHER the PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear."

Acts ii. 33.-St. John vi. 33.-1 Cor. iii. 6.-Rom. viii. 2.-St. John i. 4. v. 26. vi. 33. 63. xx. 31.—Tit. ii. 16.

11. Q. On whom does our LORD CHRIST shed forth His HOLY SPIRIT?

A. Only on those who believe in Him; that is, on HIS CHURCH, which is, HIS BODY.

12. Q. To what purpose has He given His SPIRIT to His Body, the Church?

A. 13. Q. What Life?

In order that, IT MIGHT HAVE LIFE.

A. The Life which, CHRIST, "the AUTHOR OF LIFE," ""has in Himself;" that is, ETERNAL LIFE.

For, in like manner as our spirit is the life of our body, so also the SPIRIT Of CHRIST, is the life of CHRIST, and therefore, it is the life of His BODY THE CHURCH, which lives THROUGH HIM, her HEAD.

Acts iii. 15.-St. John i. 4. v. 26.-Eph. iv. 16. 14. Q. Prove it from Scripture.

A.

66

We were sometime alienated and enemies in our mind by wicked works;" "the children of wrath," ' and dead in our trespasses and sins."

"But, the law of the SPIRIT of LIFE in CHRIST JESUS, hath made me free from the law of sin and death."" For in HIM IS LIFE," "and to Him the Father HATH GIVEN POWER to give ETERNAL LIFE to as many as He hath given Him."

Col. i. 21.-Eph. ii. 3. 1.-Rom. viii. 2.-St. John i. 4.-St. John xvii. 2. v. 26. i. 16. 36. vi. 33. 47. 63. xx. 31.-1 Cor. xiii. 4.-Eph, iv. 16.-Phil. i. 21. -1 Thess. v. 10.-1 John iv. 9.

A. HE SANCTIFIES IT.

17. Q. What do you mean by "sanctifying?"

A. "To sanctify" is, "to make holy;" and "sanctification" is, "being made holy."
