BRONZES.

Including two Life Masks, Casts of the Hands, Statuettes, and Bas-Reliefs.

121. BRONZE Cast of the Life Mask made by Volk in 1860. Signed on the lower edge "L. W. Volk, fecit, 1860." Smoothly shaven face showing part of the neck and a small portion of hair on the forehead.

* This mask is very well known. The correspondence between Volk and Major Lambert is contained in one of the following lots.

(See Illustration.)

122. BRONZE CAST of Lincoln's right hand, closed and holding a section of broom-handle, cut for the purpose. With inscription "A Lincoln. L. W. Volk, fecit, 1860." Life size.

125.

*This is perhaps the most satisfactory portraiture we have of Lincoln in his prime, without a beard, and showing his strong and well-modelled chin.

VOLK (LEONARD W.). 4 A. L. S., from Mr. Volk to Major Lambert, in regard to a replica of the Lincoln life mask and casts of the hands; A. L. S., from Douglas Volk and the Century Co.; Article by Volk from "Century Magazine, etc." Bound in 1 vol. 8vo, half morocco, gilt top.

126. BRONZE CAST of the Life Mask made by Clark Mills in 1865. Not signed, but with inscription on the top Abraham Lincoln, 1865."

66

*This mask with the beard, made shortly before Lincoln's death, and the earlier one by Volk with smoothly shaven face, offer an interesting contrast.

127. BRONZE BUST of Abraham Lincoln; with a beard, broad low collar and evening clothes. Signed on the back, Geo. E. Bissell, Sculptor, 1893. Cast in bronze by E. Gruet, Jeune, Avenue de Chatillon, Paris. Height 16 inches.
