361. HERNDON (WILLIAM H.). A Series of Autograph Letters relating to Lincoln, between W. H. Herndon and Charles H. Hart, and from Herndon to Mr. Whiting. Mounted to 4to and bound in half green morocco, gilt top. 1866-1887

* The series comprises: A. L. S. from Jesse W. Weik, transmitting these letters; 33 letters from Mr. Herndon to Mr. Hart; 10 A. L. S. from Mr. Hart to Mr. Herndon; 6 A. L. S. from Mr. Herndon to Mr. Whiting; A. L. S. from Mr. Herndon to Mr. Boyd; and two copies of letters from Mr. Herndon to Mr. Hart.

All of these letters relate to Abraham Lincoln, those from Mr. Hart referring to his Bibliography of Lincolniana or replying to the observations of Mr. Herndon. Among the letters from Mr. Herndon are three of great importance, while all are interesting, giving many details and incidents in Lincoln's life. In a letter dated Nov. 26, 1866, enclosing a copy of a letter to Mr. I. N. Arnold, Mr. Herndon writes of the domestic life of Lincoln and his wife, Mrs. Lincoln's domestic quarrels, in my opinion, sprang from a woman's revenge which she was not strong enough to resist. Poor woman! The World has no charity for her, and yet justice must be done herbeing careful not to injure her husband. All that I know ennobles both, and their difficulties sprang from human nature." In the enclosure he gives an account of the period of insanity in Lincoln's life. A letter dated Dec. 12, 1866, reads: "Mrs. Lincoln will scold me-poor woman, without knowing that I am her friend, determined to put her right before the world for all time.'' In a letter dated Dec. 28, written under a promise of secrecy, Mr. Herndon gives complete details of the various misfortunes of the ancestors of Lincoln, far more complete, in fact, than those related in the biography published in 1889 by Mr. Herndon, which he was forced to suppress on account of his revelations concerning the domestic troubles and ancestry of Lincoln. Letters to Mr. Whiting speak of Judge Davis and Mr. Lincoln.

* FINE COPY OF THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION with the suppressed passages. Laid in is a 1 p. 4to, L. S. from Robert Lincoln, who, referring to Mr. Herndon, writes, "I became convinced that he was actuated by an intense malice, and was possessed of a most ingenious imagination. The malice arose, I am quite sure, from the fact that my father could not see his way, in view of Herndon's personal character, to give him some lucrative employment during the War of the Rebellion."
