* W M. THACKERAY'S COPY, with his signature at the top of the first blank leaf and his monogram stamp on half title. On the second blank leaf is a humorous drawing by Thackeray, evidently suggested by the book. It represents a gibbet with grotesque skeleton playing a fiddle, hanging from it, and a monk, ballet dancer, and devils dancing beneath. On page 137 appears another drawing of a stout little devil with sword and staff, decorously smoking a pipe. These 2 drawings are fine examples of Thackeray's humor and artistic ability.

Thackeray was a great admirer of Fielding as a novelist, and this set of first editions of "Tom Jones' is, from a literary point of view, one of the most interesting books from his library.

* W. M. THACKERAY'S COPY, AND CONTAINS 17 PENCIL DRAWINGS BY HIM. With the exception of two, the drawings are on the margins and illustrate the text. Some of them are delightfully humorous and can be perfectly understood without reference to the printed matter. The two drawings on the fly-leaves are more than sketches, and in the nature of finished drawings. Among the marginial sketches are some typical subjects; such as a cupid taking off his hat to a bag of gold which is walking by; a man flat on the ground examining an ant-hill; two duellists continuing to fight after losing most of their limbs, etc.

T.” On the margin of a passage of "Summer' he has written "Beautifully rendered," and at the end of "The Chase, "Grand in the extreme. W. M. T." At the bottom of the first page of "Life of Mr. Thomson" Thackeray has written in sarcastic vein "There is not a little error in this so-called life. W. M. T.''

On the front fly-leaf there is a drawing on each side, one of a man in armor and another in walking costume. On the inside of the back cover is a drawing of a boy in a fool's-cap. Thackeray's monogram stamp is on the first leaf, the book-plate of Henry Carmichael-Smyth is in the front; and there is an affidavit on the front cover.

44. AINSWORTH'S English-Latin Dictionary. 8vo, old diamond calf (title supplied in manuscript). In a handsomely gilt red morocco case. [Lond. 1827]

* W. M. THACKERAY'S COPY, USED BY HIM WHILE HE WAS AT SCHOOL. On the inside of the front cover is his signature "W. M. Thackeray. Charter-House, July, 1827." Underneath is a stamp consisting of his name with a crown and spears above it. On the fly-leaf preceding the text there are three signatures by him and another stamp with his initials and the crown above; on the reverse is a drawing of a man playing the violin; on the last blank leaves are about ten sketches in pencil, mostly of heads, and his signature appears three times. Thackeray's monogram stamp is on the first leaf.

This work undoubtedly was used in preparing his lecture on George the IV, and the notes were made at the back for easy reference. There is a pencil sketch of a head in the back of volume 2. Bookplates of Henry Crawshay, and probably bought by him in the sale of Thackeray's books in 1864, as the book appears in the catalogue.
