555. CROWE (EYRE). ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH OF THACKERAY dressed as a Turk smoking a long Turkish pipe. Used as the cover design on "Notes on a Journey from Cornhill to Grand Cairo." With the autograph signature: "W. M. Thackeray 1845." 12mo, mounted to 4to.

* Lewis Melville in his "Biography of Thackeray' attributes this portrait (with a query) to D. Dighton. A signature appears in the lower corner of the picture, but it is illegible.

*The figure is that of a butler with a basket and bottles, (said to be a portrait of John, Thackeray's butler). The Initial "A" for "Arthur" the first word of chapter 3. Beneath Thackeray has written, "Chap. III, 1st vol. Pendennis. John go and get some madeira."

*"'A man," said Thackeray, "with greater skill than Laurence in drawing crayon portraits in a couple of hours, I could not name. 563. LEECH (JOHN). ORIGINAL PENCIL PENCIL DRAWING. Caricature of Thackeray delivering his first lecture on the English Humourists. Autograph note on the back: "Thackeray's Lectures on the English Humourists. 'Mr. Michael Angelo Titmarsh as he appeared at Willis' Rooms in his celebrated character of Mr. Thackeray.' 12mo, mounted to 4to, framed and glazed (both sides).

* Leech was one of a number of Thackeray's friends who were present to hear his first attempt at lecturing, and to encourage him on account of his great nervousness. Apropos to this Thackeray wrote the delightful letter to Doyle, which is quoted elsewhere in the catalogue. (See Illustration.)

564. MACLISE (DANIEL). ORIGINAL CRAYON DRAWING. Portrait of Thackeray in 1857. Large full front bust. Signature hardly discernible: "D. Maclise, 1857." Size 12 x 171⁄2 inches. In oak frame.

565. MACLISE (DANIEL). ORIGINAL PENCIL PORTRAIT OF THACKERAY. Three-quarter length, reclining on a couch, facing to left. To one side a bust profile sketch of Thackeray and in the background a faint outline sketch for a full front portrait. Signed in pencil. 4to, mounted, framed and glazed. Circa 1835.

566. CARICATURE PORTRAIT OF THACKERAY, unsigned, and artist unknown. A clever pencil sketch of the author seated in an arm-chair, with the pen of wit and the sword of satire in his hands. Leaning against the chair within easy reach is a bludgeon labelled "irony." On an octavo sheet of drawing paper.

567. PORTRAIT OF THACKERAY DRAWN BY SIR HENRY THOMPSON. Pencil sketch drawn in pencil on a piece of heavy paper of 12mo size. It shows the left profile and extends to the bottom of the collar. At the bottom is an inscription in ink "W. M. T. abt 1857. H. T."
