ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND DRAWINGS BY

THACKERAY.

1016. THE ROSE AND THE RING; or, the History of Prince Giglio and Prince Bulbo. Written and illustrated by the Author on 90 pages of paper of an oblong shape, mounted on a heavy drawing paper to an oblong 4to size, and bound in red levant morocco, gilt-tooled back and sides, gilt edges. Enclosed in a red levant morocco slip-case, which in turn is enclosed in a leather case, with lock and key.

* This delightful fairy tale is too well-known to require any introduction. It was not conceived with the idea of publication or thought of monetary gain, but to amuse and please little Pen Browning and the neighboring children while Thackeray was in Rome in the Winter of 1853; and especially one little girl, who was sick with the fever, to whom the text was read and the pictures shown each day as they were finished.

The manuscript is particularly interesting in its differences from the printed text-and such differences occur throughout. A number of the illustrations are in colors, and in all cases they are much more spirited and delightful than in the printed book. A note to one of the first pages does not appear in print. It reads: "Where names of places, historical events and so forth are made the Governess will do well to explain to her little darling herself. Thus she may ask here: My love, where is Cognac?"

The title to Chapter II is changed; there is an extra illustration, and the end is different. Chapter III has about 3 pages of text about "Fairy Hopstick and Fairy Blackstick," which are omitted in the printed text.

Chapter V differs at the beginning and two interesting draw
