569. JOHNSTON (JOSEPH E.). A. L. S., 1 p. 4to. Tallahoma, Feb'y 12th, 1863. (Stamp in corner.)

*To General Rosecrans, beginning: "I have had the honor to receive your letters of the 18th & 19th ult'o addressed to me, as I understand, because you find yourself compelled by a sense of duty to humanity to decline communicating with General Bragg by flag of true, &c.' . . . I gladly avail myself of this opportunity to express to you my appreciation of your humanity-exhibited in the care of our wounded, who fell into your hands at Murfreesboro,"

570. JOHNSTON (JOSEPH E.). A. L. S., 2 pp. 4to. Chattanooga, March 2d, 1863. Endorsed by Gen. Bragg.

* To General Bragg, beginning: "Gov. Harris, who came to see me on Saturday, gave me the impression that information had been received of large reinforcements to Rosecrans than I supposed had been received. A report from Shelbyville is much to the same effect. The Governor's apprehension seemed to be that the Federal army is now strong enough to hold its own in your front, & at the same time to make detachments to cross the mountains to the right & left (or one of them) and cut the railroad," etc.

571. JOHNSTON (JOSEPH E.). A. L. S., 1 p. 4to. Chattanooga, March 8th, 1863. Endorsed by Gen. Bragg.

* To General Bragg, beginning: "I sent you this morning the substance of a despatch received from General Pembertonthe gathering of Federal troops at the head of navigation on the Tennessee is probable, & and, as the scouts report, may be to threaten your communications," etc.

572. JOHNSTON (JOSEPH E.). A. L. S., 2 pp. 4to. Dalton, March 16th, 1864. Endorsed by Gen. Bragg.

* To General Bragg. A most interesting letter, showing that the resources of the South had begun to give out at this time. It reads in part: "You direct me to take measures to procure artillery horses as soon as possible. I have been trying to do so since January, but I beg that it may be considered that I am confined to very small limits in the north western part of Georgia and the mountains of Alabama, a district long since stripped of everything necessary to an army," etc.

573. JOHNSTON (JOSEPH E.). A. L. S., 1 p. 4to. In the field, April 25th, 1865 (blank corners mended); Telegraph Dispatch dated April 27, 1865; from Johnston to Sherman, with a copy of Sherman's reply. 3 pieces.

* A MOST IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR DOCUMENT, DEALING WITH THE SURRENDER OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY. Addressed to Major General W. T. Sherman, and reading in part: "I have had the honour to receive your despatch of yesterday summoning this army to surrender on the terms accepted by General Lee at Appomattox Court House. I propose, instead of such a surrender, terms based on those drawn up by you on the 18th for disbanding this army-& a further armistice to arrange these terms," etc., etc. The telegrams are in an unknown hand and state that Gen. Meade had entered Danville, etc.

* Headed "General Orders No. 22." ON TAKING LEAVE OF HIS ARMY; reading in part: "Comrades: In terminating our official relations, I earnestly exhort you to observe the terms of Pacification agreed upon; and to discharge the obligations of good and peaceful citizens, as well as you have performed the duties of thorough soldiers, in the field. I now part with you with deep regret, and bid you farewell with feelings of cordial friendship; and with earnest wishes,' ,, etc.

Thomas did not see or converse with me when he came north from Texas in Nov. 1860. And further, he could not have entertained the suspicions of Gen. Twiggs that are expressed, for in letters to Gen. Scott and his Ad't Gen'l written some two months before Texas seceded," etc.
