letters by that eminent soldier. Van Horne's Life of Thomas was a work which Major Lambert intended to extra-illustrate, and to that end he caused the leaves to be mounted in quarto and gathered 400 portraits, 200 pages of autograph manuscript by the author, and a large amount of other valuable material, all of which is now offered as one lot. A bronze bust of Thomas (a life-size portrait in uniform by Wehner) is also included in this sale.

Another Union officer greatly admired by Major Lambert was General Sherman-he was with him on the March to the Sea-and in this Collection will be found nineteen important Sherman letters, among them his letter to Grant announcing the capture of Savannah; but in addition to these letters Major Lambert acquired the original manuscript of Sherman's "Memoirs"-one of the most important books ever written on the Civil War.

Among the important miscellaneous items in this sale, of particular interest to collectors, are the following: "O Captain, my Captain," in Walt Whitman's autograph; a copy of John Brown's "Provisional Constitution;" a fine letter by Zachary Taylor, written from Mexico; a clean and perfect copy of the Statutes at Large of the Confederate States, and a first edition of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," with three exceedingly interesting letters by the author.

Part I of the Lambert Collection containing Lincolniana, and Part II, containing the Thackerayana, have already been sold; this is Part III, and the dispersal of the Lambert Collection will be concluded by the sale, later in the Season, of Part IV, embracing the remainder of the Lincoln material.
