Nenninger's dissertation examines the relationship of, and interaction between, Romans and the natural world by focusing on the experiences of Romans in the forests of the Roman north west province. In a heavily annotated text, Nenninger analyses, for example, the representation of woodland in Roman religion, the effect of woodland on the day-to-day organisation of the military and civil administration, descriptions of the Germans in contemporary sources, Roman military techniques in woodland and Caesar's campaigns.
