* though it may, perhaps, be the opinion of many, that other Versions of the latter might have been substituted with advantage. It is, however, to be remembered, that faulty as it is in many respects, it still contains some beautiful passages, and under present circumstances, some advantages. It is already affixed to most of the Prayer Books, and will be placed within the reach of the Congregation at a very moderate price. As the Hymns are printed solely for the use of the Church, and will be sold merely with a view to defray the expenses of the publication; it is hoped that no other motive will be imputed to the Pastor, than a desire to promote the edification of his flock,—and that the latter will meet the wishes of the former by a due attention to the resolve of St. Paul: I WILL SING WITH THE SPIRIT, AND I WILL SING WITH THE UNDERSTADING ALSO. Every one of the numerous attempts hitherto made has failed in some important points. Milton and Merrick are examples. When the former approached the Psalms, his soaring Genius sunk below mediocrity, and he stripped his Author of the beauties of language; whilst the latter consulting modern elegance, attenuated his ideas, and lost his simplicity.
