During the past summer the School of Expression has lost three of its ablest Trustees. All these were personal friends, and two of them were former students. Their advice and counsel will be greatly missed from the Board of Trustees.

DR. J. W. FOSS, Phoenix, Ariz., came to the School as a special student twenty-nine years ago, and from the first he took a very warm personal interest in everything connected with the institution, an interest which continued after going West as shown in his visits to the School and frequent letters of counsel and advice. He brought his two sisters as students, and Miss Caroline S. Foye, who has made such a great success as a public reader, and also sent students from that part of the country.

Dr. Foss was a beautiful personality, and was loved by everyone. He sought into the fundamentals of every subject he touched and worked out many unique and original movements in his own profession.

REV. JOEL M. LEONARD, D.D., was one of the first students of Dr. Curry. He was a man of peculiar and unusual ability. He had great breadth of judgment in every direction, and he had with it largeness of sympathy and kindliness that made him one of the safest and kindest of counselors. He had led many great movements for good in Boston. Thousands in hours of special difficulty had gone to him for advice, and his unusual commonsense and kindness will be widely missed in this community.

As a Trustee Dr. Leonard always went to the fundamental needs of every question.

MR. JOHN J. ENNEKING, one of the greatest landscape painters of America, was an adviser of the School of a very unusual type. Dr. Curry was Librarian of the Boston Art Club for eighteen years, and during that time and many years previous he was in close touch with Mr. Enneking. It was a rare treat to get Mr. Enneking and Dr. Curry together in an argument over points of art.

Mr. Enneking was one of the most interesting of men. It was an event to visit his studio, view his pictures, hear him discuss them and criticize himself and enter into all phases of this art. He was a man, too, who was most sincere and honest, possessing a

buy him. He used to say a good artist had to be better than a good Christian. A good Christian tried to act so as to go to heaven, but a good artist knew the harder he worked on a picture and the better he made it the least likely it was to sell. He said he could paint pictures in an hour that would sell immediately and he might work for weeks on one that would not sell at all. His paradox and his intense conviction were an inspiration.

Dr. Curry said at chapel on the morning after the death of Mr. Enneking: "You know how he used to come here and lecture you students saying 'You all worship this Curry as a kind of god; it takes me to come up here and puncture the bubble.' Now," continued Dr. Curry, "I have no one who would dare to come up here on this platform and tell you the truth about me."

The students understood what this strange tribute meant. No man wanted to speak to Mr. Enneking on the subject of art unless he expected some wholesome truths put in the frankest of words.

MR. GEORGE E. CURRY, LL. B., member of the Board of Trustees, and legal adviser of the School since its inception, died December 10, 1916.
