Platform Notes

MRS. C. D. GILCHRIST (HALLEY PHILLIPS, G.C.D. '97) of Arlington, Vt., has been giving lectures on and readings from the Modern Poets, through the East, and is now in New York City. We expect her in Boston this winter, and it is hoped the students may have the opportunity of hearing her. Her programs are well chosen and of a high order.

MISS LAURA M. CARPENTER (G.C.D. '15) of Madison, Me., gave a reading of "The Truth" (Clyde Fitch) at the School during November.

Realizing that reading of plays, modern and classic, has come to be a recognized form of art, MISS NANON HERREN (Summer '12, '16) desiring to add to her well-known newspaper and literary art, is again at the School preparing for a broader field in dramatic expression.

MISS SABRA B. DYER (T.D. '16) of Belfast, Me., gave at her Commencement recital in May, Ibsen's "Master Builder," and has this winter been giving the same play to Boston audiences with great success. Miss Dyer has not only interpreted the characters, "The Master Builder" and others, but she has brought out the purpose of the dramatist in the Unity of Life in the drama world, in which the "Master Builder" has symbolized the life and spirit of the twentieth century. The reading of such a play is not only entertainment-it is a stimulation to spiritual things.

Drama circles in all of the leading cities are emphasizing the importance of reading as a fine art. With proper voice training, variety and color is given to the printed text that is inherently stimulating to the imagination and helps the audience to visualize entire scenes. The women's clubs are more and more securing professional readers to interpret and acquaint them with the best in literature. Such has been the work or Mrs. John C. Fetzer (Summer '16) of Chicago, in "The Vanguard," "The Shepherd King," "The House of Rimmon and others receiving glowing tributes.

MRS. JOSEPHINE E. HOLMES (P.R.D. '01; Artistic '08) gave "Enoch Arden," with Strauss' music, before the Ohio State Federation of Women's Clubs last year. This was followed by a Browning program, and later by a rendering of "Everywoman" and Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion."

99 66
