NOTE.

the year 1874, by

GREENOUGH,
at Washington,

THIS edition follows, with slight changes of orthograp Nipperdey, the more important various readings being notes. It is believed to be an advantage even to the y to deal with a standard text, and to know something of t which make the reading of an ancient classic differ from ern author. In illustration of the narrative, constant made of the more recent authorities, Mommsen, Long, the "History of Julius Cæsar" by Napoleon III., wit school edition of Moberly. Much care has been taken, v portion especially, to furnish in the notes a guide to the of syntactical construction, for which no author is, by g so well adapted as Cæsar.

The present volume contains the first four books of A second part, when published, will contain the remaini the three of the Civil War.
