men, when the cry of peace and toleration has served their turn, and they have thus found opportunity to disseminate their opinions, till they have got the multitude, or at least the power and influence, on their side, will turn out the veriest oppressors and persecutors,-like the Dutch Remonstrants, and like various other bodies of men that might be mentioned, in our own country, as well as in foreign lands. The same game is now playing again in our own times and country by the Roman Catholics, who join with infidels of all classes and descriptions in crying out liberality and toleration; and if ever God, in fearful and righteous judgment, should give us over to our own folly, and suffer us to be beguiled by such mere words, in spite of the experience of ages, no doubt we shall find, that, as soon as they can and they dare, they will turn out the same persecutors, oppressors, and bigots, that they have always been.

So few men really think, that the multitude are commonly deluded by mere names; and those words, peace and toleration, have, in various ages, been used by Satan and his instruments merely to blind the eyes of the unwary, and as watchwords to raise a clamour against the upright and conscientious. We ought, therefore, to take care that we well understand what they really mean in the mouths of those who use them. Upon this, facts sometimes throw a strange light-as at the times of which we are speaking, when, certainly, under the name and pretence of toleration not a little of persecution and oppression was systematically carried on. By a resolution of the States of Holland it was declared, that every one who did not conduct himself according to their notion of toleration, should be considered and punished as a disturber of the peace of the commonwealth. This applied to every one who opened his mouth, or took up the pen, to expose and refute the errors of the Remonstrants! And this was at length actually carried so far, that, in direct violation of the Act of Union between the provinces, which laid it down as a fundamental principle that no soldiers should be levied but in the name of the States-General, and under an oath of obedience to the Stadholder, as commander-in-chief, the States of Holland determined, that, in order to enforce their previous resolutions, the governors and magistrates of the respective cities should enlist men under the name of waardgelders, or city guards, who should take an oath of obedience to the States of Holland and the magistrates of their particular city; and who were thereby bound not to obey the States-General and the Commander-in-chief, but even to oppose them, if the magistrates chose to command it;-a measure which, in its natural consequences, would have led to bloodshed and civil war, had it not been for the prudence and decision and energy of Prince Maurice of Nassau, the Stadholder, who, by order of the States-General, went round to the several towns, and dismissed all the waard-gelders.

The letter of our esteemed Correspondent, A. S. T., arrived too late for the insertion of the whole in the present Number.
