Of choofing or. finding the Pfalm. The perusal of the whole book will acquaint every reader with the author's method; and by consulting the Index at the end, he
'find Hymns very proper for many occasions of the Christian life and worship; tho' no copy of David's Psalter can provide for all, as I have shewn in the Preface to the large Edition. Or, if he remembers the first line of
any Pfalm, the Table of the First Lines at the beginning of the book, will direct where to find it.
any shall think it best to sing all the Psalms in order in churches or families,
it may be done with profit; provided those Psalms be omitted that refer to fpecial occurrences of nations, churches, or single Christians.
Of dividing the Psalms. If the Pfalm be too long for the time cuftom of singing, there are paases in many of them, at which you may properly reft;! ör, you may leave out those verses which sare included in crotchets , without diTurbing the sense: or in fome plates you may begin to fing at the pause.
Do not always confine yourselves to fix stanzas, båt fing feven or eight, rather than confound the fenfe, and abuse the Pfälin in folenin worlhip.
