4 Mention five bibliographies of American history. Which would be the most useful in selecting books dealing with (a) the Revolutionary period, (b) the Civil War period?

5 Mention and compare three bibliographies of philosophy. 6 Compare Poore's Descriptive Catalogue of the Government Publications of the United States with Ames's Comprehensive Index of the Publications of the United States Government.

7 Describe and criticize Sonnenschein's Best Books.

8 Mention the author of a good bibliography of (a) printing, (b) geology, (c) furniture, (d) historical novels, (e) steamengines, (ƒ) botany, (g) taxation, () bookbinding, (i) sculpture, (j) Latin literature, (k) domestic economy, (7) ethnology. 9 Outline a general plan for the preparation of a reading list with notes on any subject of general interest.

10-12 What five books on the Eastern question should you suggest for a small public library?

13-15 Select five works on the Renascence that would be of great value in a public library.

1-2 Enter seven volumes (to be assigned) on condensed accession sheets, using Library School Rules.

For questions 3-7 write on the back of order slips the titles of reference books used.

3-4 Make out order slips for the following four books:

5-6 Make out order slips for the following four books: Chauvigné, La dernière lettre.

Freytag, Soll und Haben.

7 Make out order slips for the following two books:

Horweg, Beknopt overzicht der natuur- en werktuigkunde.
Annunzio, La Gioconda.

8 Write an order letter for the books mentioned either in questions 3-4 or in questions 5-6.

9 In marking books what are the relative advantages of an ink stamp, an embossing stamp and a perforating stamp? Describe what in your judgment is a satisfactory method of marking ownership of books for a large public library.

10 What records of gifts to a library is it desirable to make? What methods should be used to secure gifts for a public library?

II How should you answer a trustee who wished to economize by giving up the accession book?

12 What are the main provisions of the international copyright law?

13 Should a small public library of about 5,000 volumes collect pamphlets? If so, on what lines?

14 Mention two or more good auction firms and the cities in which they are located. Mention one well-known dealer in second-hand books.

15 Fill out an auction blank for two books (to be marked on auction catalogue), looking up prices in reference books and bidding 10% less than off.

Library School Shelf List Rules, Cutter's Author Tables, Shakspere Scheme and Time Number Scheme may be used in the examination.

Answer questions 1-5 and five of the others but no more. If more than five of the others are answered only the first five answers will be considered. Division of groups is not allowed. Each complete answer will receive 10 credits. Papers entitled to 75 or more credits will be accepted.

1-2 Assign 20 book numbers according to the instruction of the New York State Library School, class numbers, authors and titles being given.

3-5 Make 20 shelf list entries (the necessary facts being assigned), using cards.

6 Shelf list one set of periodicals (the necessary facts being assigned), using 10x25 cm shelf sheets.

7 Give three practical reasons for keeping a shelf list.

8-9 What can be said for and against the use of (a) a bound book as a shelf list, (b) loose sheets for a shelf list, (c) a shelf list on cards?

10 When a library contains a large number of books on a subject, is it more or less desirable to use Cutter book numbers than when it contains only a few books on that subject? Why? II What form of book number should be used for fiction and biography in a popular library? Why?

Mention the

12 Is it desirable to label the backs of books? different forms of labels used and state their relative cost and convenience.

13 Describe what is considered the best method of treating over size books.

14 What is the opinion of the best librarians on the subject of fixed and relative location of books?

15 Describe a good method of treating newspapers both in the reading-room and on the shelves.

14 What is meant by (a) a partial title card, (b) a series note, (c) a general secondary card? What is the difference between an added entry card and a reference card in the name catalogue? 15 Arrange the following for the name catalogue:
