ADVERTISEMENT. B74C4 THE present Catalogue has been prepared to meet the immediate wants of those, who are hereafter to have access to the Athenæum as a circulating Library. It is, therefore, simply an alphabetical index of the Books; made, indeed, in some haste, but not probably containing more errors and deficiencies than might be expected from a first attempt to furnish a Catalogue of so large a Library. A similar index is still wanted of about a thousand volumes of Tracts, which are already bound, and of a nearly equal amount of Tracts, which have never been bound; but, it was not possible to prepare this index for the present volume without too long delaying its appearance. Several thousand volumes of Books were ordered for the Athenæum during the last summer. As none of them are rare, or difficult to be procured, they will no doubt soon be received; and it has, therefore, been thought best to insert their titles in this Catalogue. They can easily be distinguished, because no number of a shelf is attached to them, and no note of the time or place where they were printed. When this large addition shall have been received, and an index of the very valuable collection of Pamphlets arranged, the materials for a scientific Catalogue will then be prepared. Such a catalogue cannot, indeed, be completed, without much care, time and labour. But the munificent patronage, which has been lately extended to the Athenæum; the rich and abundant materials shown in the index now presented to the public; and the hopes that may reasonably be indulged for its future increase, all demand a full and careful catalogue of the works it contains, arranged in the order of subjects.
