[Many words of commendation and thanks, both written and oral, have come to us from our consigners as the result of our management of their sales, which furnish a substantial basis of confidence for our future work.

The summer season (usually an idle one in the Book Auction trade)

prints have crowded our rooms to overflowing and our cataloguers have been kept steadily at work throughout the season. We have also added to our office force and more thoroughly systemized our methods of busi

ness.

THE OUTLOOK

for

As stated above, our stockrooms have been filled by consignments sent to us during the summer, and a busy season is before us, which we have made careful preparation.

[ocr errors]

Of these consignments we can only mention the private libraries whose owners have consented to the public use of their names. Among these are:

1. The Library and Dramatic Collection of William J. Le Moyne, the well-known comedian, consisting of Books, Portraits, Prints, etc.

2. The Collection of First Editions of American Authors, made by CHARLES E. PYSER, of Paterson, N. J. Includes Arnold's eight leading authors, Bryant, Emerson, Hawthorne, Holmes, Longfellow, Lowell, Thoreau and Whittier, and is a notable collection with many rare items.

3. A portion (Part II.) of the Library of JOHN KENDRICK BANGS, of which the first portion was sold in February. A choice collection of rare books and autographs.

4. CYRUS W. FIELD. A collection of letters from his correspondence, Manuscripts, Books and Prints.

5. The Library of the late DR. EDWIN HAMILTON DAVIS, of New York, the eminent archæologist.

6. A portion of the Library of the late J. ROMEYN BRODHEAD, consisting chiefly of Americana, with many rare items.

7. Part II. of the Dramatic Collection of the late GEORGE BECKS, the first part of which was sold in March.

8. Part III. of GENERAL JAMES GRANT WILSON'S large and valuable collection of Autograph Letters, Manuscripts, Portraits and Prints.

9. An unusual collection of Early Printed and Rare Books from the Library of the late PROF. CHARLES SHORT, of Columbia College, and other private sources. This collection does not include any of the books heretofore sold from Prof. Short's library.

10. A large private collection of BIBLIOGRAPHICAL WORKS, many rare and valuable.

11. A collection of Paintings and Engravings belonging to the estate of the late DR. JOSEPH WIENER.

We have also several private libraries and collections of Books and Autographs, the names of the owners of which are either withheld or will be announced later; also an unusually large number of miscellaneous consignments of varying

interest.

This is our opening " menu." We hope to add largely to it and to make our full contribution to a memorable

season.

Catalogues, terms and other information furnished upon request.
