first members of the Royal Society of Water-Color Painters, superintended the production and wrote the letterpress. The paintings were all by the best artists of the day-men who are now famous in water-color, Cattermole, Havell, Bennett, Reeve, Wild, and others. Printed in colors, they were then finished by hand, adding to their perfection as a completed picture and to fidelity as a facsimile of the original drawing. Both exteriors and interiors of the palaces are shown. An added value is in the fact that many of the buildings have been altered since the drawings were made: Buckingham Palace was altered; additions were made to Windsor Castle; Carlton House is destroyed, and so on.

624. REYNOLDS (SIR JOSHUA). PERSPECTIVA PICTORUM ET ARCHITECTORUM ANDREA PUTEI. Engraved title and 100 plates. Folio, original vellum, enclosed in leatherlined case. Romæ, M.DC. XCIII. [1693]

A volume of UNIQUE AND EXCEPTIONAL INTEREST. On the title-page is the autograph of Sir Joshua Reynolds, "J. Reynolds," and his well-known square stamp "Sr J R." Mounted and inserted on the fly-leaf, general title, title to Part I and the engraved title are four sheets of paper, containing SKETCHES AND COPIES OF PORTRAITS BY KNELLER, VAN DYCK, LARGILLIÈRE. This volume formerly belonged to a Mr. W. Ford, who has written the following account on the fly-leaf: "When he was but Eight years old he read with great avidity and pleasure the Jesuit Perspective, a book which happened to lie on the Window-seat of his Father's parlour; and made himself so completely master of it, that he never afterwards had occasion to study any other treatise on that subject" [Malone's Life, page 7-communication from himself in 1786].

"He then attempted to draw the school at Plympton, a building elevated on stone pillars, and he did it so well that his

father said, 'Now this exemplifies what the author of the Perspective asserts in his preface,-that, by observing the rules laid down in this book, a man may do wonders; for this is wonderful.'" [Ibid., page 8, Malone's Life of Sir Jos. Reynolds.]

"It is almost unnecessary to say that this is the identical copy which belonged to Sir Jos. Reynolds, as his autograph and well-known stamp on the title-page are a sufficient indication of it; however, I will further state in confirmation of the fact, that I purchased it myself at his sale, along with the Drawings, which are undoubtedly of his hand."—W. FORD.

Such is the history of this remarkable volume, which has such interesting association with one of the greatest painters not only of the eighteenth century, but of all time.

Lond. Ackerman, 1815-1816-1817

A FINE AND PERFECT SET, AND ALL. FIRST EDITIONS. ILLUSTRATED WITH ALMOST ONE HUNDRED PLATES IN COLORS BY THOMAS ROWLANDSON.

It is thought that an edition of The Dance of Death that was published by Coxhead in 1816 (a very crude production) had the effect of creating the desire in the great caricaturist to produce an edition of The Dance of Death and The Dance of Life worthy of his highest genius. That he succeeded in the production of the above volumes is beyond all doubt.

The union of the gruesome and grotesque strongly appealed to his imagination, and he employed exceptional care on the work, with a result that this work will always stand out prominently as one of the master productions of a master of his art.
