appear a second time-his appearance, and his kingdom, will be revealed together. He himself will appear, he will want no assistance to perform his mission. The Father has given all judgment to the Son. Judgement is given to one who is sufficient for the office-sufficient for all the preparations, and all the circumstances of the judgment. All are under his dominion already, and he has the keys of hell and death. None but an almighty arm is sufficient to handle them. He will, with his voice, bring out this body; and with the word, DEPART, he will send back his enemies from his presence.

Christ, on the right hand of the Father, secures the eternal subjection of ungodliness. He is under engagement to the Father to do this, before he delivers up the mediatorial kingdom. He must reign till his enemies are made his footstool. The Father has said, Sit there, on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Here is a double engagement, and a double promise. The Son says, I will subdue them to thine authority, O Father,

and according to thy will.

The Father

says, I will, in honour to thy work, and thy person, see them subdued. They are the despisers of thy person, the persecutors of thy brethren, the opposers of all thy mediatorial kingdom. Thus also is secured the triumph of his saints, and the vindication of his cause in the last day. He will appear the second time unto salvation.

The work accomplished by Christ on earth, is the cause of his having dominion over the world for the salvation of sinners. He might have subdued the ungodly men, and sent them and the devils to hell, without it; but he could not have subdued the dominion of sin and the devil in the hearts of sinners. He could have judged the devil in his person, but not in his dominion in the hearts of men-he could not have been judged as the prince of this world.

The ultimate end of the resurrection of Christ, was to bring the universe into order. "Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets:" and to bring his people to the place

where they shall for ever behold his glory. "I will that they be with me, where I am,

that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me."

SERMON XV.

GOD THE FATHER OF HIS PEOPLE.

If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God.-JOHN viii. 42.

IN the great work of salvation, God, the FATHER, in the person of his Son, has given the most extensive and complete revelation of himself: in it also the Son fulfils all righteousness on behalf of the guilty transgressor, with a view of saving him unto eternal life and to make him the child of God, the HOLY SPIRIT circumcises his heart to love the Lord his God, and makes him a partaker of the divine nature-the nature

of faith, love, and hope, and every grace. He that is brought to believe, is brought to love. "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable, and full of glory." This "divine nature" has every advantage to act itself out in love to the great Mediator, by means of the fulness that is in him for the supply of the wants of the sinner. Great forgiveness, creates great love-the greater the gift, the greater the love. In our poverty, we believe in Christ, and by believing we are made the children of God-God becomes our Father. The gifts of God were purchased for us in love, and they produce love. "He loved us, and gave himself for us." He saves our life in love-he gave his life, that our life should be spared; and having bought our life in love, he bestows it in love. He gave his body for the life of the world, and he gives himself for life to the world.

The life of the believer is entirely in him, and of him-to him we are indebted for all. He is all, and in all. He prepared

spiritual blessings, and he communicates them to his people. As God made coats. of skin for our first parents, and clothed them with them, so Christ clothes the naked, the shameful, and the guilty sinner. He made the raiment, and he puts it on, and he does both in love. The impress of his love is upon every gift; and love to himself is imparted with the gift of justification. He says to the sinner, Here is a mantle for thy nakedness, which I have myself prepared, which cost me my life of labour in the world, and which has been dyed in my blood: it is fit to be seen in the court of heaven: take it, and be thankful my love, which provided it, and my hands, which formed it, are prepared to clothe thee in it. When the sinner is made a child of God, as to relationship, he is made a child as to disposition and purpose. Those that receive the Son, have the privilege of being the children of God. Who are they? They that are not born of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God— the divine nature is communicated to them from God. The nature of faith includes
