them; and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Verily, I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives.

It is written by St. Luke:

And when the hour was come, he sat down, aud the twelve Apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

It is written by Paul, in 1 Cor. xi. :

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come.

It is also written in the Gospel of St. John, that Jesus said :— My Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. I am the Bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. If any ma man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father

hath sent me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

I am the Door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and go in and out and find pasture.

I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

I am the True Vine; ye are the branches. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. For without me ye can do nothing.

BENEDICTION XIV.*

By the established usage in the University Church, a baptized person may be admitted a member, by the subscription of his or her name to the Covenant printed on page 277, with the announcement to the Church of the fact of such subscription.

Where there is a distinct ceremony of confirmation, or coming to the Lord's Supper, the following form may be used, with prayers or other additions:

Do you here, in the presence of God and of this congregation, believing in the holy religion of Jesus Christ as taught in the Scriptures of the New Testament, and taking it as the divine guide of your life, and the way of salvation, declare it to be your desire and your present purpose to be henceforth a true disciple of that blessed Saviour, and to remember him in the way which he has appointed?

Ans. I do.

Then the minister may lay his hand on the head of the person answering, who kneels or stands before him, and say:·

Now, therefore, live; yet not thou, but Christ live in thee; and the life that thou livest in the flesh, let it be by faith in the Son of God!

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who has made heaven and earth. The Lord Almighty defend and bless you with his heavenly grace, and bring you into his heavenly kingdom! Amen.

that, if we, through the spirit, do mortify the deeds of the body, we shall live, and who hast commanded us not to be weary nor faint in our minds striving against sin, bring us this day to a true humiliation, and deliver us from evil. Stand at our right hand, we beseech thee, and work with our hearts, that we may overcome in the time of our temptation; and being graciously absolved from all our iniquity, made clean from its corruption, loosed from its burden, may we pass our time in quietness and holy trust here on earth, and finally obtain everlasting life, through our Lord and Saviour, the only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

BENEDICTION I.

faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The baptism that saveth us is not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God.

FOR INFANTS.

AND Jesus took a child and set him in the midst; and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but Him that sent me.

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and his disciples rebuked those that brought them; but when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as a little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Dearly beloved, ye have brought this child here to be baptized; I demand therefore,

Will ye faithfully and earnestly exhort this child to renounce the hurtful vanities of this world, with all covetous desires of the same, and carnal desires of the flesh, so that he may not follow nor be led by them?

E who do truly repent you of your sins, who are in love and charity with your neighbors, who desire to express your gratitude and reverence to your Saviour, Jesus Christ, by commemorating his death in the way which he hath appointed, and who intend, by the aid of God's grace, to live a Christian life, draw near with faith, and take this holy ordinance to your comfort.

Hear the words of invitation and comfort which our Saviour speaks to all who truly turn to him:

Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth give I unto you.

Hear also what his holy Apostles say:

Christ, our Passover, is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the Feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
