The book was dedicated to Kean, in the days of his prosperity, and among a great variety of the most interesting sketches of theatrical life of the period, gives a long account of the early struggles of that histrionic genius, which may be taken as one of the most authentic narratives that we have.

No man was better fitted by natural ability and actual experiences to gather facts connected with every variety of life, or to relate them with sprightly accuracy, than the author of "Life in London," and Editor of "Boxiana."

In the Eliot Genealogy is published a list of books in the Library of Judge John Eliot of Winsor and Guilford, grandson of the Apostle. This list was filed in the Probate Office in Hartford in May, 1719. In the list is this title " Erasmus Colloquis, 2s."

In the same book it is stated that when Major-General Daniel Gookin, Judge John Eliot's maternal grandfather, applied to Harvard College in 1682 for a scholarship for John Eliot, 3d, he wrote: " His father left him but small matters (except his bookes) of outward things in order to bring him up to learning, which was his last desire at his death."

With a slip signed by Mr. Wilberforce Eames, authenticating the signature, inserted.

Lugd. Batavorum: ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1642 * A rare and beautiful edition of Cicero's works, the first published by the Elzevirs. Vol. IX has 301 pages, and is the preferable issue. See Willems, No. 535. De Bure dwells with rapture on the beauty of the paper and brilliancy of the type"; and Dibdin speaks of it as "very beautiful and correct." In fact, all bibliographers unite in eulogizing it. A VERY FINE COPY, AND ONE OF THE TALLEST KNOWN, MEASURING IN HEIGHT 133 MILLIMETERS. Undoubtedly the finest which has ever been offered for sale in this country.
