1 Love divine, all love excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down! Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown. Father! thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation, Enter every longing heart.
2 Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast; Let us all in thee inherit,
Let us find thy promised rest. Come, almighty to deliver,
Let us all thy life receive; Graciously come down, and never, Never more thy temples leave.
1 Lo, God is here! let us adore, And humbly bow before his face: Let all within us feel his power, Let all within us seek his grace.
2 Lo, God is here! him day and night United choirs of angels sing: To him, enthroned above all height, Heaven's host their noblest homage bring.
3 Being of beings! may our praise Thy courts with grateful fragrance fill: Still may we stand before thy face, Still hear and do thy sovereign will.
For a Blessing on the House of Prayer.
1 O, BOW thine ear, Eternal One! On thee our heart adoring calls; To thee, the followers of thy Son, We bend within these sacred walls.
2 Here let thy holy days be kept; And be this place to worship given, Like that bright spot where Jacob slept, The house of God, the gate of heaven. 3 Here may thine honor dwell; and here, As incense, let thy children's prayer, From contrite hearts and lips sincere, Rise on the still and holy air.
4 Here be thy praise devoutly sung; Here let thy truth beam forth to save, As when, of old, thy Spirit hung On wings of light o'er Jordan's wave.
5 And when the lips, that with thy name Are vocal now, to dust shall turn, On others may devotion's flame Be kindled here, and purely burn.
1 LORD! in heaven, thy dwelling-place, Hear the praises of our race, And, while hearing, let thy grace Dews of sweet forgiveness pour; While we know, benignant King, That the praises which we bring
Are a feeble offering,
Till thy blessing makes it more.
2 More of truth, and more of might, More of love, and more of light, More of reason, and of right, From thy pardoning grace be given! This can make the humblest song Sweet, acceptable, and strong, As the strains the angels' throng Pour around the throne of heaven.
1 LORD of the Sabbath! hear our vows, On this thy day, in this thy house; And own, as grateful sacrifice, The songs which in thy temple rise.
2 Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love; But there's a nobler rest above; To that our longing souls aspire, With cheerful hope and strong desire.
3 No more fatigue, no more distress, Nor sin, nor death, shall reach the place; No groans shall mingle with the songs Which warble from immortal tongues.
4 No rude alarms of raging foes, No cares to break the long repose; No midnight shade, no clouded sun, But sacred, high, eternal noon.
O long-expected day, begin!
Dawn on these realms of woe and sin;
Fain would we leave this weary road, And sleep in death, to rest with God.
1 LORD! before thy presence come, Bow we down with holy fear; Call our erring footsteps home, Let us feel that thou art near.
2 Wandering thoughts and languid powers Come not where devotion kneels; Let the soul expand her stores, Glowing with the joy she feels.
3 At the portals of thine house, We resign our earth-born cares: Nobler thoughts our souls engross, Songs of praise and fervent prayers.
Going to Church. Psalm 122.
1 How did my heart rejoice to hear My friends devoutly say, "In Zion let us all appear,
And keep the solemn day!"
2 I love her gates, I love the road;
The church, adorned with grace, Stands like a palace, built for God, To show his milder face.
3 Up to her courts, with joys unknown, The holy tribes repair;
The Son of David holds his throne, And sits in judgment there.
4 Peace be within this sacred place, And joy a constant guest: With holy gifts and heavenly grace Be her attendants blest.
My soul shall pray for Zion still, While life or breath remains;
There my best friends, my kindred, dwell, There God, my Saviour, reigns.
Prayer for Divine Direction.
1 ETERNAL Source of life and light! Supremely good and wise!
To thee we bring our grateful vows, To thee lift up our eyes.
2 Our dark and erring minds illume With truth's celestial rays; Inspire our hearts with sacred love, And tune our lips to praise.
3 Safely conduct us, by thy grace, Through life's perplexing road; And place us, when that journey 's o'er, At thy right hand, O God!
1 O LORD! where'er thy people meet, There they behold thy mercy-seat; Where'er they seek thee, thou art found, And every place is hallowed ground.
