London: Thomas M'Lean, 1826-30 FIRST ISSUE. Fine copy of this exceedingly rare series of humorous sporting plates. Very few copies have the full number of 42 plates, but this one is complete, with the plates in splendid condition.

A Steeple Chase. A Series of Beautiful Sporting Prints, six in number, aquatinted in brilliant colors, drawn and engraved by Henry Alken. The titles are as follows:

2. Getting over an old blind roadway and doing it well. 3. A Slap at a Stone enclosure,-five to four on White. 4. Crossing a deep ravine dangerous to pass.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the four mounted plates in the front part of the volume. It is said that these plates were not ready in time to be printed on plate paper when the volume was first issued, and are therefore mounted. The volume is clean and crisp throughout, and the plates, which are among the finest ever executed by Henry Alken, are in brilliant state.

With numerous illustrations by Henry Alken: title-page and 6 full-page brilliantly colored plates, and also 43 illustrations on wood. Bound in an oblong 4to volume, full brown levant, gold tooled back and inside borders, gilt edges, by Riviere. 1829 These drawings are remarkable as being out of the ordinary sphere to which Alken devoted his art. The beauty and grace of the Arabian horse is well shown.

This oldest and most important American Sporting Periodical was founded in September, 1829, by John S. Skinner. In his Introduction to No. 1, Volume 1, he said: "The want of a repository in this country, like the English Sporting Magazine, to serve as an authentic record of the performances and pedigrees of the bred horses will be admitted by all, . . . The longer we remain without such a Register, the more difficult will it be to trace the pedigrees of existing stock and the more precarious will its value become. Sensible for years past of the danger which in this way threatens property of so much value and persuaded that
