98 CHIKAMATSU (Monzaemon). EHOSHI-ORI [The Hatter]. [1699].

Japanese text. 4to, wrappers, as issued.

£501-1The first edition of this historical drama, by the Japanese Shakespeare. From the late Sir Edmund Gosse's library [see Cox's "Library of Edmund Gosse", page 67].

Sir Edmund Gosse considered the book to be one of the rarest in his collection. Inserted in the copy are two communications from W. G. Aston, dealing with the work. The book is in a half morocco box case, of which Sir Edmund Gosse writes, on a post card: "This box was made for me by Messrs. Sangorski & Sutcliffe, in February, 1903. It was the first box of the kind they had ever made . . . and they finished it entirely with their own hands."

99 CHINESE PAINTINGS OF BIRDS AND FLOWERS. A collection of 98 original water-colour drawings of birds, each with a flowering branch of tree or shrub.

Oblong folio, 13′′ (height) × 18′′ (length), crimson, straight-grained morocco, gilt.
N.D. [c. 1805].
£150/-/-

This is one of those collections of superb drawings which are a revelation of the sure
taste of the English connoisseur of the early nineteenth century. Each of the 98 paintings
is meticulously drawn and beautifully coloured. As the birds are the gay exotics with the
correspondingly bright flowers, the result is in the greatest degree colourful and
charming. [See illustration No. 2].

114 CONRAD (Joseph). VICTORY, An Island Tale.

Cr. 8vo. 1915.

Wise, No. 25.

First edition. Good copy.

£30/-1

Loosely inserted is a 1-p. 4to. T.L.S. from the author about the book, dated Dec. 10, 1913. After saying that it would be easy to finish it at any time, and make it suitable for serial publication, he writes: ". . . those that approach Conrad ought to know how he writes... the subject is not European. Neither is it a sea-tale. . . . The subtitle will be An Island Story.... Large human interest I can guarantee, for that is my quality...."

The curious reference to a sub-title and not to a title is explained by Conrad's foreword to the book, in which he states that only after finishing the novel did he decide on the title-Victory. This was his first book to find general popularity.
