tions for the improvement of the East-India Company. Written Originally in French, By Mr. Dellon, M.D.

EDGEWORTH (Maria). See 35, 443.

£51-1

We venture to call special attention to the following numbers. Taken together these items form an extraordinary collection of examples of the magnificent bookbinding of the celebrated "EDWARDS of Halifax". Each item is in remarkably well-preserved condition-in some cases being practically as fresh as when the volume left the artistbinder's hands. They are without doubt the finest examples extant of Edwards's skill. We have given only two illustrations, as in their main features the bindings are all similar. The same ornaments are usually used, though the designs are naturally somewhat varied.

3 vols., fcap. 8vo, vellum, extra, with three exquisite water-colour portraits painted underneath the vellum, the binding by Edwards of Halifax, 1782. £125/-/In 1785 Edwards took out a patent for his "Invention of Embellishing books bound in vellum by making drawings on the vellum which are not liable to be defaced but by destroying the vellum itself."

The little set catalogued must be one of the finest specimens of this particular style of binding extant.

The "Mirror", the first Scottish literary periodical, was edited by Henry Mackenzie,

and the portraits painted on this particular copy are probably of him and two of his distinguished contributors.

The set is in the finest possible condition.
