The first edition. The title-page is mounted, and a few early pages are cropped at the
foot, affecting a few catchwords. The last leaf has been repaired, and portions of two
words are missing from it.

The book contains commendatory poems in English and Latin by Robert Randolph,
I. T., Thomas Terrent, R. Brideoake, Ed. Gayton, G. W., Jos. Howe, Owen Feltham,
R. Gostelow, and Richard West.

A magnificent set, from the Syston Park Library, and also having belonged to Knapton,
the publisher of the book. In addition to the fine portraits by Vertue which are in the
work itself, the volumes have been extra-illustrated by the fine set of engraved portraits
by J. Houbraken, which were also published by Knapton. According to a contemporary
note in the book, these portraits were all specially selected on account of the brilliant

state.

An exceptionally fine copy of this great work by the famous botanist and artist. The
edges of the volumes are untrimmed, the copy being one of about twenty specially
selected by Redouté for presentation purposes.

This copy was given to Citoyen Chaptal, Ministre de l'Interieur, and has a long in-
scription written in Redouté's fine and bold hand.

Lucas, Prebendary of Westminster, became blind in middle life, and "thinking it my duty to set myself some task which might serve to divert my thoughts from melancholy contemplation of my misfortunes", he wrote "An Enquiry after Happiness", which proved his most popular book.
