498 THE EARL OF SURREY'S COPY. CORNUCOPIAE LATINAE LINGUAE. Hoc est, Ditissimum penu: unde omnia, quae in primis ad culturam in literis ingeniorum desyderari possunt, maxima et diligentia et copia exponuntur, authore Nicolas Perotto, Sypuntino Pontifice, viro in eo genere tanta eruditione, tantoq labore, ut illum Latini omnes in hanc diem prae caeteris omnibus complecti soleant. Basle, 1536. Folio, calf, gilt [by Berthelet], rebacked, enclosed in buckram box, with leather label. £100-

Formerly owned by the great Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey [1517-47], poet, with his name "Henn Comitis de Surrey", and also his interlaced initials, written on the fly-leaf. Surrey's arms are also on the binding, clearly decipherable, though somewhat

worn.

In view of the particular nature of the book catalogued it is interesting to remember that Surrey was the earliest Englishman successfully to imitate Italian poetry in English

verse.

The volume bears the book-plate of Lord Howard of Effingham.

It is hardly necessary to stress the importance of this volume. Rarely do opportunities occur for collectors to acquire volumes so directly associated with any outstanding literary personage of the time of Henry VIII.

499 SURTEES. SPORTING NOVELS. Coloured frontispieces and numerous illustrations. 6 vols., cr. 8vo, cloth, with morocco backs, as issued. N.D. The "Jorrocks" edition.

Scarce. Swift's first publication-dealing with the impeachment of the Whig lords. 501 SYLVESTER (Joshua). THE Parliament of Vertues Royal: (Summoned in France; but assembled in England) for Nomination, Creation, and Confirmation of The most Excellent Prince Panaretus. A Praesage of Pr. Dolphin: A Pourtrait of Pr. Henry: A Promise of Pr. Charles. Translated and Dedicated To His Highnes, by Josuah Sylvester. Sm. 8vo, morocco, extra, with inside dentelles and gilt edges, no imprint, place or date. £241-1

The Hoe copy, with book-label. Includes the four supplementary leaves, which it lacked when in the Hoe Library.

The dates which appear on some of the sub-titles of this curious work would seem to indicate that it was issued about 1616, shortly before the death of the author. The quaint wording of the numerous sub-titles and dedications give the work an added interest.
