The Lord is at thy right hand,
He shall crush kings in the day of his wrath.
He shall execute justice among the nations ;
He shall crush the heads of his enemies over many lands.
He shall drink of the brook in the way ;
Therefore shall he lift up his head.

BENEDICTION VII,

SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT.

COLLECT.

BLESSI

LESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy scriptures to be

written for our learning; grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that, by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

PROPHECIES.

ISAIAH AND JEREMIAH.

Now will I sing to our well-beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill :

And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a wine-press therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

And now, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. What could have been done more to my vineyard that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes ?

And now, go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard : I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up: and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down.

And I will lay it waste : it shall not be pruned nor digged ; but there shall come up briers and thorns : I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon

it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but

behold a cry.

Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

In mine ears said the Lord of hosts, Of a truth, many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitants.

Woe unto them that shall rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink ; that continue until night, till wine inflame them

And the barp and the viol, the tabret and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts : but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge ; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried

ир

with thirst. Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humBut the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God, that is holy, shall be sanctified in righteousness.

bled :

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness ; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him !

Therefore, as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust. Because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light : they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor.

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood ; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder ; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah ;

1

Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day I took them by the band, to bring them out of the land of Egypt ;

But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel ; after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts ; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord : for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord : for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; the Lord of hosts is his name.

O Lord, open thou our lips !
And our mouth shall show forth thy praise !

PSALMS.

OPEN to me the gates of righteousness : I will go unto them, and I will praise the Lord ;

This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter.

I will praise thee; for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

This is the day which the Lord hath made ; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now,

I beseech thee, O Lord ! Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.

Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.

God is the Lord, which bath showed us light ;

Thou art my God, and I will praise thee : thou art my God, I will exalt thee.

O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

Praise him for his mighty acts : praise him according to his excellent greatness.

Praise him with the sound of the trumpet : praise him with the psaltery and harp.

Praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

BENEDICTION II.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT.

COLLECT.

GOD, the Father of Jesus Christ our Lord, who at his

first coming didst send a messenger to prepare his way before him; grant that the ministers of thy word may likewise so prepare and make ready his way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that, at his second coming to judge the world, we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight. And this we beg in the name of Jesus Christ, through whom we ascribe unto thee all honor and glory, now and ever. Amen.

PROPHECIES.

ISAIAH AND JEREMIAH.

In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah : We have a strong city ; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.
