On the reverse is a pen-and-ink drawing of a Sphinx, drawn by Rowlandson and signed by him in pencil.

"By the accession of Virginia

nine states have now adopted the Constitution proposed by the Convention of the United States. We congratulate our fellow citizens on this event, because this union will in all probability insure blessings for which America has fought and bled," etc.

A MOST INTERESTING HISTORICAL LETTER. "It was owing to the situation of the Southern States, and the desire of their delegates, that the meeting of the new Government was so long deferred.. The rejection of the Constitution by North Carolina creates a gloom among the Southern members. . Mr. Hancock is the character who through the continent wil be most agreeable. Should he decline, Mr. J. Adams will undoubtedly be most generally voted for," etc.

The etched plates measure 18 x 10 inches, and the vellum mat 2 1-2 x 20 inches. After printing the requisite number for members the plates were cancelled and a duplicate set of "destroyed plate proofs " made for each set. The present set, however, contains only three of the five. The etchings are stamped with the insignia of the Society, and signed by both artist and etcher. An unusual feature of this set of etchings is that the remarques are all executed by the artist, Howard Pyle, instead of the etcher.
