PREFACE. ܙܕ In March, 1906, I submitted to an examining committee of the University of California faculty a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy entitled “Adversaria Critica in Suetonii de Vita Caesarum Librum Octavum.' Some of the decisions reached in the original dissertation have been reversed in the light of further investigation and reflection, and additional evidence has been accumulated on those points where there has appeared to be no good reason for change, but on the whole the material collected for the thesis supplies the bulk of the present essay. A statement of the passages considered in it will be found on the following page. I desire to acknowledge here with much gratitude my indebtedness to Professor H. C. Nutting of the University of California for his close criticism of my thesis and his friendly suggestions for its betterment. WILLIAM HARDY ALEXANDER.
