II. The Work will be published in Parts or Numbers, two of which will be delivered annually, each containing Twelve Plates or Etchings. The first number will be published 1st March 1821.

III. The price of each Part will be L. 1, 11s. 6d. plain, or L. 5, 5s. finely coloured after nature.

These prices, as profit is in no respect the Author's object, are calculated at the lowest rate that will defray the expence of materials and publication, and will include the temporary Letter-Press. The ultimate and descriptive Letter-Press will be published afterwards at a small separate charge.

IV. This Work will comprise the resident and periodically migratory, as well as occasional visitants to this kingdom; and wherever a striking dissimilarity of plumage is found to exist, either between the sexes, or in the same Birds at different periods of their own age, or of the year, additional figures will be introduced, illustrative of these differences.

V. The intention of the Author is, to publish this Work in two separate series:-1st, LAND BIRDS; 2d, WATER BIRDS. The portion of Letter-Press connected with the respective series, to appear after the Plates of each have been delivered, purposely that advantage may be taken of the latest opportunities for acquiring any new and interesting information, and that it may be possible thus to insert in it specific references to the Plates in their systematic order; which Letter-Press will be printed uniformly with the Plates, on paper of the same quality. For the convenience, however, of purchasers, in the mean time, brief descriptions will be delivered with each Part of the Birds contained in it.

The Author could not presume to lay before the Public the plan of a work of the present magnitude and expence, without stating what he hopes may be deemed a sufficient apology for the undertaking, which he now respectfully submits.

That very few delineations hitherto produced in this branch of Natural History have been drawn and engraved immediately from the living Bird, is abundantly evident from the want of that strong expression of character and vividness of marking, by which such must ever be distinguished from a stuffed specimen. The Etchings in the present Work will be deduced from this source, wherever it may be attainable.

Many figures in Ornithological Works, that are conspicuous for delicacy of professional execution, and beauty of general effect, are yet deficient in that accuracy of detail, which must ever be of the utmost importance in this study: such detail usually unfolding the specific characters of the Feathered Tribe. The figures in the present Work being, for the greater part, of the natural size, will, the Author has little doubt, be pronounced free from this objection.

From a want of due observation and comparison of some species, both in their different stages towards maturity, and also when at their full growth, of the plumage at different seasons of the year, much confusion, and an unavoidable multiplication of the species, have taken place. By the plan here adopted of occasionally introducing duplicates of the same species, under these peculiar circumstances, it is hoped not only to verify the few condensations of species which have been ventured on, but also to offer such hints for further investigation, as may lead to important results in this interesting pursuit.

Such are the professions on which the Author submits his claim to public favour; and he begs leave to call upon the lovers of this alluring study, to assist him by any remarks they may have made, or which may occur to them during the progress of this Work, He would particularly direct their attention to the Variations of Plumage from the young to the adult Bird; not only those variations incident to the period of moulting, but also that gradual change of feather in some birds, which has so lately become the subject of observation, and which proved so fertile a source of doubt and error to the earlier Ornithologists.

A few of the Plates have been furnished by a friend of the Author's, Captain R. Mitford of the Royal Navy, who has possessed similar opportunities for observation, and the same desire to improve them with himself. And in thus laying before the Public the fruits of these private studies and amusements, they are actuated by no desire so strong, as to promote in others the study of a branch of Science which they have themselves found particularly fascinating and delightful.

TWIZELL HOUSE,

December 1820.

As the number of copies of the above Work to be cast off is intended, in the first instance, to be very limited, such purchasers as intend promoting the undertaking, are requested to forward their names to the Publishers, or to their respective Booksellers, with as little delay as possible, specifying, at the same time, whether they desire coloured or uncoloured impressions.
