And, crowned with victory, at thy feet
We'll lay our laurels down.

Christian Warfare and Victory.

STAND up, my soul-shake off thy fears, And gird the gospel armor on; March to the gates of endless joy, Where Jesus, thy great Captain's gone. 2 Hell and thy sins resist thy course; But hell and sin are vanquished foes; Thy Jesus nailed them to the cross, And sung the triumph when he rose. 3 Then let my soul march boldly on, Press forward to the heavenly gate; There peace and joy eternal reign, And glittering robes for conquerors wait. 4 There shall I wear a starry crown, And triumph in almighty grace; While all the armies of the skies Join in my glorious Leader's praise.

Watchfulness and Prayer inculcated.

MY soul, be on thy guard,

Ten thousand foes arise;

The hosts of sin are pressing hard
-To draw thee from the skies.

2 Oh watch, and fight, and pray;
The battle ne'er give o'er;
Renew it boldly every day,
And help divine implore.

3 Ne'er think the victory won,
Nor lay thine armor down:

Thy arduous work will not be done
Till thou obtain thy crown.

4 Fight on, my soul, till death
Shall bring thee to thy God;

He'll take thee, at thy parting breath,
Up to his blest abode.

Christian Courage and Self-denial.

AM I a soldier of the cross,

A follower of the Lamb?

And shall I fear to own his cause?-
Or blush to speak his name?

2 Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

3 Sure I must fight-if I would reign;
Increase my courage, Lord!
I'll bear the toil-endure the pain,
Supported by thy word.

4 Thy saints, in all this glorious war,
Shall conquer, though they're slain :
They see the triumph from afar,
And soon with Christ shall reign.
5 When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all thy armies shine

In robes of victory through the skies,
The glory shall be thine.

Succor implored in spiritual Conflicts.
ALAS, what hourly dangers rise!
What snares beset my way!

To heaven, oh let me lift mine eyes,
And hourly watch and pray.

2 O gracious God! in whom I live,
My feeble efforts aid;

Help me to watch, and pray, and strive,
Though trembling and afraid.

3 Oh keep me in thy heavenly way,
And bid the tempter flee;

And let me never, never stray
From happiness and thee.

Hope of Heaven by Christ.

AND art thou, gracious Master, gone
A mansion to prepare for me?
Shall I behold thee on thy throne,

And there forever sit with thee?
Then, let the world approve or blame,
I'll triumph in thy glorious name.

2 What transport, Lord, shall fill my heart, When thou my worthless name wilt own! When I shall see thee as thou art,

And know as I myself am known! From sin, and fear, and sorrow free, My soul shall find its rest in thee.

Heavenly Joy on Earth.

COME, we that love the Lord,
And let our joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.

2 Let those refuse to sing,

Who never knew our God,

But children of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad.

3 The hill of Zion yields

A thousand sacred sweets,
Before we reach the heavenly fields,
Or walk the golden streets.

4 Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry;

We're marching thro' Immanuel's ground, To fairer worlds on high.

[blocks in formation]

CHILDREN of the heavenly King,
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Sing your Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.
2 Ye are travelling home to God,
In the way the fathers trod;
They are happy now-and ye
Soon their happiness shall see.
3 Shout, ye little flock, and blest;
You on Jesus' throne shall rest;
There your seat is now prepared-
There your kingdom and reward.
4 Lord, submissive make us go,
Gladly leaving all below;
Only thou our leader be,
And we still will follow thee.

8s & 7s.

Aid implored in Temptation and Distress.
GENTLY, Lord, oh gently lead us,
Through this lonely vale of tears;

Through the changes that await us,
Till our last great change appears.
When temptation's darts assail us,
When in devious paths we stray,
Let thy goodness never fail us,
Lead us in thy perfect way.

2 In the hour of pain and anguish,
In the hour when death draws near,
Suffer not our hearts to languish,
Suffer not our souls to fear:
When our mortal life is ended,
Bid us in thine arms to rest,
Till, by angel bands attended,
We awake among the blest.

This Life a Pilgrimage.

ARISE, my soul, on wings sublime,
Above the vanities of time;
Remove the parting vail-and see
The glories of eternity!

2 Born by a new, celestial birth,
Why should I grovel here on earth?
Why grasp at vain and fleeting toys,
So near to heaven's eternal joys?

3 Shall aught beguile me on the road,
While I am walking back to God?
Or can I love this earth so well,
As not to long with God to dwell?

4 To dwell with God!-to taste his love!
Is the full heaven enjoyed above:
The glorious expectation now
Is heavenly bliss begun below.
