Heathens will be still the same :

Mighty Spirit!
Witness to the Saviour's name.
2 Thou hast promised, by the prophets,

Glorious light in latter days:
Come, and bless bewildered nations,
Change our prayers and tears to praise:

Promised Spirit !
Round the world diffuse thy rays.
3 All our hopes, and prayers, and labors

Must be vain without thine aid :
But thou wilt not disappoint us-
All is true that thou hast said:

Faithful Spirit!
O’er the world thine influence shed.

The Church the Dwelling-Place of God.
GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God;
He, whose word can ne'er be broken,

Chose thee for his own abode.
2 Lord, thy church is still thy dwelling,

Still is precious in thy sight;
Judah's temple far excelling,

Beaming with the gospel's light. 3 On the rock of ages founded,

What can shake her sure repose ?
With salvation's wall surrounded,

She can smile at all her foes.
4 Glorious things of thce are spoken,

Zion, city of our God;
He, whose word can ne'er be broken,

Chose thee for his own abode.

Conversion of the World anticipated.
O’ER the gloomy hills of darkness,

Look, my soul-be still, and gaze;
See the promises advancing
To a glorious day of grace!

Blessed jubilee!
Let thy glorious morning dawn!
2 Let the dark, benighted pagan,

Let the rude barbarian, see
That divine and glorious conquest
Once obtained on Calvary :

Let the gospel
Loud resound, from pole to pole.
3 Kingdoms wide, that sit in darkness,

Grant them, Lord, the glorious light; Now, from eastern coast to western, May the morning chase the night;

Let redemption,
Freely purchased, win the day!
4 Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel;

Win and conquer-never cease!
May thy lasting, wide dominions
Multiply, and still increase:

Sway thy sceptre,
Saviour, all the world around!

L. M. 347

Prayer for the Conversion of the World. INDULGENT Sovereign of the skies,

And wilt thou bow thy gracious ear While feeble mortals raise their cries,

Wilt thou, the great Jehovah, hear

2 Look down, O God, with pitying eye,

And view the desolations round;
See what wide realms in darkness lie,

What scenes of wo and crime abound! 3 Loud let the gospel trumpet blow,

And call the nations from afar;
Let all the isles their Saviour know,

And earth's remotest ends draw near. 348

S. M.
O GOD of sovereign grace,

We bow before thy throne,
And plead, for all the human race,

The merits of thy Son.
2 Spread through the earth, O Lord,

The knowledge of thy ways;
And let all lands with joy record

The great Redeemer's praise ! 349 GREAT God! the nations of the earth

Are by creation thine;
And in thy works, by all beheld,

Thy power and glory shine.
But, Lord, thy greater love has sent

Thy gospel to mankind;
Unvailing what rich stores of grace

Are treasured in thy mind. 3 Oh! when shall these glad tidings spread

The spacious earth around,
Till every tribe-and every soul,

Shall hear the joyful sound?
4 Smile, Lord, on each divine attempt

To spread the gospel's rays,

C. M.

And build on sin's demolished throne

A temple to thy praise.

S. M. 350

Prayer for the Conversion of the World.
O LORD, our God, arise,

The cause of truth maintain;
And wide o'er all the peopled world

Extend her blessed reign. 2 Thou Prince of life, arise,

Nor let thy glory cease;
Far spread the conquests of thy grace,

And bless the earth with peace. 3 Thou Holy Ghost, arise,

Extend thy healing wing;
And o’er a dark and ruined world

Let light and order spring. 4 Let all on earth arise,

To God the Saviour sing;
From shore to shore—from earth to heaven,

Let echoing anthems ring! 351

L. M.
SOVEREIGN of worlds! display thy power,
Be this thy Zion's favored hour:
Oh bid the morning-star arise,

Oh point the heathen to the skies.
2 Set up thy throne where Satan reigns,

In western wilds, and heathen plains,
Far let the gospel's sound be known;

Make thou the universe thine own. 3 Speak! and the world shall hear thy voice:

Speak! and the desert shall rejoice:

L. M.

Scatter the gloom of heathen night,

Bid every nation hail the light. 352 ASCEND thy throne, almighty King ;

Now spread thy glories all abroad; Let thine own arm salvation bring,

And be thou known the gracious God. 2 Let millions bow before thy seat,

Let humble mourners seek thy face, Bring daring rebels to thy feet,

Subdued by thy victorious grace. 3 Oh let the kingdoms of the world

Become the kingdoms of the Lord; Let saints and angels praise thy name;

Be thou through heaven and earth adored. 353

ARM of the Lord, awake!-awake!
Put on thy strength-the nations shake!
Now let the world, adoring, see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee. 2 Say to the heathen, from thy throne,

'I am Jehovah, God alone!"
Thy voice their idols shall confound,

And cast their altars to the ground. 3 Let Zion's time of favor come!

Oh, bring the tribes of Israel home!
Soon may our wondering eyes behold

Gentiles and Jews in Jesus fold!
4 Almighty God! thy grace proclaim

Through every clime-of every name!
Let adverse powers before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all!

L. M.
