XXI, my object has been to supply the needs of advanced students, especially at the Universities, by providing them with a correct text of Livy, a statement of the various readings in the MSS. and editions, and an ample commentary, dealing with textual difficulties and questions of grammar, geography and history as they arise. How far I may have realized my object must rest with my readers to determine. I can only say that I have spared no pains in executing a work on which I have been engaged for some years, and have freely availed myself of the labours and investigations of continental scholars, to whom I now gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness, as it would have needlessly increased the bulk of this volume, had I done so on every occasion on which I consulted them. I have followed Madvig's text, except where I regarded his emendations as too rash or improbable.
