The text of the MS. is complete in 3 vol., 624 pages, but the last volume is another manuscript copy of the first volume, also entirely in the autograph of the author, and with fewer corrections.] Ainsworth (W. [The following insertions have been made :-Two pages of Ainsworth's original rough draft, showing his first intention of calling the tale Thames Darrell"; a port. of Ainsworth, being a proof on india paper of the front. to the first ed., in 3 vol.; the original sketch by Cruikshank of the scene in the loft, showing a variation from the design eventually adopted; a pencil sketch by Cruikshank of Newgate, etc.; the front wrapper of Part iii. from the edition in parts; a port. of Jack Sheppard, in two states, published by Bowles; and inlaid is a scarce chap-book entitled History of the Remarkable Life of John Sheppard," published Northampton, 1724, with engravings showing the pamphlet which inspired Cruikshank's etchings of The Escape" (the engravings are inlaid opposite the etchings, and on the margin of one is a pencil port. of Cruikshank by himself). [The presentation copy from Queen Victoria to her Chaplain (Principal Tulloch), with the Queen's signed and dated autograph inscription in each volume (five inscriptions in all), as follows: "To Principal Tulloch from Victoria Rg. Balmoral, June 6, 1875." The inscription fills the whole of the fly-leaf in each case. Inserted in the first volume is an autograph note signed by the Princess Royal, Victoria Pss. R.," and dated Osborne, July 28, 1856. This note is also signed by the Royal Prince and Princesses-Arthur, Alice, Helena, and Louise, who were then quite young, Prince Arthur being but a boy. The signatures comprise the whole of the royal children then living.]
