Laid in is a letter from Edward Batty (nephew of John Barrow) telling of having inherited it from his mother, to whom it was presented by Barrow. The fly-leaf is inscribed: Johanna Maria Batty, 1837, from her dear Brother John Barrow." No secret was made of the fact that Thackeray illustrated it. [These drawings were suggestions by Thackeray to Meadows as to the appearance of the two characters of his sketch. On Rook's portrait, Thackeray has written, in his slanting handwriting: "Captain Rook, about 35, a gentlemanly villainous-looking man, not exaggerated in countenance." The other portrait bears Thackeray's caption: "Mr. Pigeon, looking young, beardless, debauched." Meadows evidently did not coincide with

(692), March 1, Anderson Galleries $1,025 [This remarkable specimen of Thackeray's early work is one of but three copies known at the present time. It was privately printed "For presentation only," and was in all probability issued shortly after Thackeray left college, when he was a man of substantial fortune. The lines describing the humorous illustrations are those of "The Three Sailors," which appeared in Bevan's "Sand and Canvas." The story of his reciting them at a Bohemian party in Rome is well known. That these lines are Thackeray's no one can doubt, and the ballad is included in Lady Ritchie's last ed. Furthermore, Thackeray was so extremely proud of his artistic abilities that he would never in his earlier years have permitted another artist to have illustrated his own ballad; in fact, no other artist could have interpreted the spirit of it as he has done. There are so many similarities between the illustrations in this piece and many of his drawings in "Thackerayana " as to leave no room to doubt the hand of Thackeray in these Surprising Adventures."
