MAITLAND CLUB.

WITH a view to the completion of a Deed, entailing the House of Abbotsford, with its Literary and Antiquarian Collections, on the representatives of SIR WALTER SCOTT, it was found necessary to have executed sundry copies of a Catalogue of the Library; and it appeared that the expence would not be very greatly increased by having them done in print. On hearing of this arrangement, it occurred to me that, by obtaining leave to strike off some additional copies, at my own cost, I might be enabled to present the Maitland Club, of which Sir Walter was an early associate, with a volume not unworthy of their acceptance.

The Catalogue was drawn up by Mr. COCHRANE, (formerly Editor of the Foreign Quarterly Review,) who spent several months at Abbotsford for that purpose; and who seems, on the whole, to have discharged the duty with exemplary care and accuracy. The volume has also been printed under this gentleman's sole inspection.

A Catalogue of any eminent author's Library is likely to be prized by persons familiar with his writings. In the present case, undoubtedly, the nature and extent of the Collection throw light in a remarkable
